Their must be a better way to do this, mine screamed and screamed and this was just a simple cleaning.

The dentist was cool as i think every other kid he sees is like that...but as a parent it was hard. I just have a massive headache now.

You tell the doctor to leave the room, then you snatch your kid up smack them up the side of the head.

If they don't stop, it's simple.. threaten to break everything they own. Game stations, bikes, you name it.

It's really easy... control your kids and stop letting them control you.

but seriously there are some easier solutions without having to get agro..

#1 solution.

Simply practise with your kids. normally when you brush/clean they are standing up at the bathroom sink , not in a dentist chair tilted back with a bright light in their face and some wierdo poking pointed stuff in their mouth. SO practise the way they will actually have it done , tilt them back in a chair , put a napkin over your face and shine a maglite in their mouth, so its not so unusual when a dentist does it.

yeah as i get ready to be a dad Ive been reading about stuff like this, ...

from what i understand its good to start them going to dentist BEFORE problems occur and BEFORE they need to, so they get used to is and dont become scared.... however i am not experienced yet lol
just educating myself on whats to come

It is probably one of those ymmv type of things, but both my boys went to the dentist starting at 1. I did it so they would get accustomed to going before they were old enough to get too freaky about it.

right, well ive read most parents just let the first teeth rot out in a kids mouth, so people who like you (and I will be) will begin the child on early path of good health.

I was surprised to read that most parents feel dentist visits are not needed until after the first teeth fall out lol so yeah by that time the kid probably already expeirences pain at the gums and is fearful of dentist after having rotting teeth. Its very common I hear.

Really? That's interesting. I think I went my whole life. I've only ever had 2 cavities... one was on a baby tooth, and right now I have one on a wisdom tooth... which is getting pulled.

I tend to agree if you have boys, but not is you have a girl. If a father pulls that shit with a girl, she will think that all men can do that to her. I dont need my girl being a porn str because she has daddy issues.

She is 19 months and she was running around last night and she fell cracked her head into the corner of the dresser last night and started bleeding. She stopped crying pretty quick but the holing her down to put neosporin on it and dress the wound was tough. Had to break out my BJJ moves because she is that strong. I felt like the worst dad.

Being a dad and seeing your kid suffer is the very worst thing to see.

This is a good point, mine needs some work because of a wisdom teeth but for this the dentist will do things sedated. As an adult i have a fear of going to the den.

We had a book.. the berenstain bears or whatever.. they went to the dentist. We read it over and over before my son went to the dentist. He knew what to expect, and that it was no big deal.

yep, it was also mentioned on some dentist program on the wall tv in the dentist office last time we went. It had all kinds of facts about kids and teeth... they showed children with bad teeth and I thought to myself damn why do people do that to their kids, so I remembered it.

I remember when I was in grade school a friend told me that he did not go to the dentist. I always thought that was so bizarre. Proper dental hygiene is important. I visited the dentist a few months ago after about three years of not doing so... that was a mistake.

You can add putting them to bed with a bottle/sippy cup to that list. The liquid pools in their mouth as they fall asleep, and causes decay.

I agree, and not to get into huge discussion about incomes versus dentist visits, but lets just say, those in a certain income bracket are usually the ones who put off the dentist. You can easily dig up articles on that. Agreed...things should be taken care of at home first. And the Internet helps kids understand things greatly.

It's more about ending the situation to me, I don't have to smack my kids - it's more about stopping the problem, now! For me, I simply have to snap my fingers and point to the floor or wall, and push ups or chairs start, even the corner works. I often don't even have to speak.

But I don't care if you're getting your teeth looked at, at the airport, buying cloths, eating out, whatever it is. Male or Female.. it's no different.

At home we teach them how to act for eating out by having a family dinner. They can act perfect, every time even with guests over. But when you go out to eat they see the other kids acting stupid... "when" your kids start to act up, if they aren't used to stopping on the spot to listen to you, without question... you're screwed - and the older they get, the more screwed you are.

It doesn't mean you have to be aggressive with them but does mean you shouldn't enable them.

My 13 month old just cut her first few molars this week. Made the appointment for her to go today.

She loves brushing her teeth and does it after every meal. She has a toothbrush in all three bathrooms.

My sister's little one just went and was a total terror.

All the exam chairs have large LCDs on the celing and the kids get to choose a movie / cartoon to watch while the dentist works..It makes ALL the diference

This is great advice. My brother has a 6 year old who is very afraid of anything new and hates the doctor and dentist. My brother practiced with her for the dentist and it really helped her out. Last year she got stepped on by a horse and broke her leg. The first visit when it happens she was find because she was hopped up on pain meds, but the visits after that to get it checked and get the cast cut off she was very nervous. My brother actually talked to her and did some "practice run" showing her what they were going to do when they x-ray her and when they cut it off. It really helped her out a lot. When she started to freak my brother just showed her that they were doing exactly how they had practiced so it wasn't a big deal.

Good idea Smokey....can't believe i didn't think of that one.

My son had some issues at the dentist. When i realized he's wasn't having it (laying on the dentist bed, etc) i shoved him off the bed and climb on myself saying that I wanted the after-dentist treat bag.

The dentist totally played along and was saying how big the bag of goodies really is. The dentist and I had this whole conversion about the goodie bag and all the treats inside. Now my son is begging climb back on the bed.

I told to him to back off because daddy wanted to do his time with the dentist so I can get the treats. Now my son is flustered and trying to push me of the bed...haha.

The dentist ask me, "should we give him one more try?" I said "nope..he passed up his turn." My son starts screaming and crying.....and i kept telling him, "you missed it man....maybe next time."

Now my son is really pissed. I finally told him "ONLY if you do it right and the way the dentist tells you, THEN you can try it again." And the dentist is telling him, "Last time because your dad is ready to go with his big treat bag."

My son pushed me off the bed, jumped on, through himself back, opened wide and was the perfect patient for the whole cleaning....LOL

Kids are to funny....probably wasn't best way to handle it (ie, pseudo bribe...as we never use bribes at all over here) but got the job done none the less.
