Ugh. I have never read anything like that, but it's totally preventable by establishing a good routine. Genetics and luck may play a factor but knock on wood, at 22 & 13, neither of mine have had a cavity.

You can add putting them to bed with a bottle/sippy cup to that list. The liquid pools in their mouth as they fall asleep, and causes decay.
