ctr seems to be dropping in mainstream, the future looks tough as more and more users become adblind and simply throwing up adsense ads is not going to cut it anymore

I dunno EB. I'd say mainstream is easier now but, unlike about 4 years ago, it's no longer the same principles as adult when it comes to driving traffic.

The thing about mainstream is that there's so many more places and ways to get and keep lots of traffic now than ever before. It's insane.

Congrats!! I've always spread myself across adult & mainstream and I like it that way. Keeps me sharp since I get to learn from both sides. IMHO adult has always been bleeding edge. ;)

The reason adult webmasters fail with mainstream sites, is often because they aproach it the same way as Adult.

My overall eCPM for Mainstream is around $1-1.10
The best adult I have done so far is around $0.40-0.45 - but average is around $0.30

I just got my first adsense wire (for 18 months...). A whooping $270. All organic traffic though, and to just 2 sites I have.. lol. Now just to do 10000 more sites like that and I'm golden.

how so
tube views sell for like 15 cents per view in mainstream
in adult you would be luck to get 0.2 cents per view

i find it way easier to make money in mainstream, doing the same seo, optmization stuff.

no clue what you mean by tube views and its ok most here walk around saying mainstream this mainstream that simply because they lucked out and sold one ebook

as far as why adult sells for cheaper well explain this if you have a porn site that makes 100k net a month you are lucky to get 100kX 6 8 months yet in mainstream youd be able to sell easy for X30months

why does a full page color ad in a porn magazine that reaches 200k people cost 2000 bucks and in a mainstream magazine about 40,000

has nothing to do with who makes more, remember most mainstream companies will spend stupid money on non trackable ads too

so yeah most guys making cash online like huge sums of it (like google) i guess are busy selling mainstream companies ads

selling product itself is not easy at all digital or hard goods

to get 250000 hits to a porn site is easy to get 250000 hits to mainstream is almost impossible

like i said people who are not involved in mainstream talk lots of bullshit, they basically talk about what they think based on their desktop calculator

I think "we" the internet-generation are spoiled in that sense, we're used to having very very detailed trafficstatistics. I bought a month-long nationwide TV-ad spot in 2007 for an online store of mine, and even though I could tell sales increased 'a lot', I had no way of tracking whether the sales came from the campaign or some other source (as the store doesn't have 'steady' traffic but can jump up and down quite a lot from month to month).

I *HATE* that.. no matter where I get my ads from, I always make sure I can set campaign-tracking etc so I know where the traffic comes from, and whether I'm making any money off it..

Now the 'fad' in Finland are these 'online telephonebooks', and my company gets around 3-5 calls per week from these catalogs and want me to spend ?100-?2000/year or so to be listed there. I'm sure a lot of the smaller, older, companies who are not used to the way Internet works are going to fall for this scam, over and over again without getting "anything" in return. It's not really even a scam, since they DO have the listings online etc..but maybe send 1 hit/year. I bought one such spot 2 years ago from the company that has the biggest print-telephone book in Finland, and I got a total of 200 hits for my ?800/year.

Now..this is a bit off topic and rambling, but I just figured I must chime in and say how much I HATE (non-free) trafficsources that I can't track. heh.

optimize the title on a porn video so that it get picked up by the search engine and spikes to 50k views in the first 4 days and you have a hard time finding people who would pay you for that service

do the same thing for an independent musician trying to build a fanbase on youtube and you will have tons of people beating down your door.

The skill set is exactly the same, keyword identification, permutation stacking, density analysis.

you will get paid a lot more to do the exact same thing.
