The UK was not built for heat

Went out for my morning walk at 7am and it was already hotter than it normally is at any part of the actual day here. Apparently, we are going to hit over 100 degrees this week. Which, on the 'what people are used to' scale is amazingly hot for us and air conditioning is just about non-existent over here and especially in personal homes.

Is the rest of Europe as bad this week?

The UK wasn't built for any kind of weather which is kind of ironic seeing as we get all different kinds from one week to the next. There'll be hosepipe bans soon, but as soon as it starts raining we'll have people getting flooded out again.

I love when its real warm in the UK during the day but at night its impossible to sleep. Fans don't work as they just blow hot air at you.

Southern Spain's hotter than usual but it's built for it. Still haven't had to stick the AC on yet though, 8th floor, top of a hill, so I get a lovely breeze.

London gets really sweaty and smelly fast, just don't go on the tube that's gotta be 50c+ and stinking.

In the day you can deal but it is suppose to be 30 at night this week. At night? Might have to sleep in the tub.

Yeah..the tube is insane. I think if they took a vote most Londoners would pay more taxes if they actually figured out how to air condition the tubes. You have to love the way they give recorded warnings about taking water with you. Ie 'if you die from the heat we warned you'

When i left the UK about 15 years ago the summer was hitting 100F and people died because of the lack of air conditioning. I see little has changed ?

The weather was 39c (102F) today at the golfcourse. It was somewhat hot, considering I don't use the carts. I did manage to score 87 none the less, 40 on the front 9..and unfortunately 47 on the back9.. umm, offtopic much?

Apart from in LA you then walk into an air conditioned building and people probably don't nearly die on public transport.

One July I went to Montana and it turns out it was the hottest that week than it had been in decades. And no one had AC. It was horrible.

hehe, yeah I know the feeling.
When I speak to my folks back there they're like "oh, it's been scorching... 25oC, what's it like there?" to which I giggle as it hasn't been lower than 25oC during the day since the beginning of May.

I love the heat, which is why I chose the Côte d'Azur, and no need for air conditioning, cos these stone houses with their 50cm solid walls keep the heat well out

Max/Min thermomter which was reset a week ago reads 34oC/20oC - bring on the heat

I love heat, but only when I am on holiday sunbathing by a pool or sat in a hotel lobby on wifi with air conditioning! I can't stand the heat in my office (no Air con, G5 quad core fans pumping out hot air eugh), and my poor kitten has started getting too hot and i don't know what to do to cool him down

More gutted for him than me tbh.

But I would imagine you have air conditioning...we need it to become affordable over here. Too many years now of people saying it doesn't usually get this hot. Well, it has the last few years..time to cool the nation down!

I had a horrible sleep last night. Must have got a couple of hours at most because of the heat.

The UK in general though isn't ever prepared for anything. A hint of snow, and the country comes to a standstill. A bit of heat, and that's too much for us too.

You wonder how other countries which get EXTREME weather conditions cope so well when you look at how bad we deal weather situations not even close to it...

That's exactly what it's like here in Louisiana.

We probably get about 2 weeks of the year when AC isn't needed.

I've gone years without turning on the heat.

not sure if you misread my post, but in the uk we only have 2 weeks of really hot weather per year, but a nice warm summer. and need heating for 6-8 months.

not sure if you misread my sarcasm, but in Louisiana we only have two weeks of slightly mild weather all year, but in the summer it feels like Lucifer's nutsack.

See my kitten is a bit weird when it comes to ice cubes, he's quite happy to kick one across the room but see if I put it in his water, he won't go near it until its melted lol. I have got an oscillating fan out of the garage and have been putting that on, was going to look at a portable air con unit though, I think they sell them in b&q.

I did read somewhere to wet a tea towel, or an old tshirt, and to drape it over a cat/dog, but that's near impossible. It must be an instinct that cats don't like water lol

You must have been suffering from heat stroke if you thought London was beautiful or clean. It is a city though so you got 1:3 right.
