We are not talking about an ISP we are talking about a web hosting company. There is a big difference.

It was down last night when I tried to access several sites that are hosted at likewhoa. I only realized they were cuz I did traceroutes and they all failed. Few hours later they were back up, but all I can say is that I'm happy I do not host with them.

I stand corrected but the premise remains the same. We colocate at a Qwest center. They are rarely down, however there are many times I receive ICQ's that our sites are unreachable. I use a tool to traceroute from many places in the world and often find peering latency issues.

Here is a good resource for any webmaster.

http://www.traceroute.org/

You can trace from anyplace in the world to your site and see if the problem is peering or hosting

Where were you in September 11th 2002? Likewhoa was down for 14 hours . It was 2 months ago. Remember? They didn't pay their invoice to Verio to strongarm them in some negociations... - Verio pulled the plug and now Likewhoa network is on shitty Yipes, a tier-2 provider. It makes Likewhoa a tier-3 provider who charge the same price as before.

Fact:

1.) Likewhoa was kicked out from Level3 for whatever the reason - BIG DOWNTIME

2.) Likewhoa didn't pay Verio, so verio pulled the plug. 14 HOURS DOWNTIME

3.) Likewhoa clients are on Yipes and it was suppose to be just temporary before they find a new tier-1 provider.

Anyway, they used to be the best, but now it's a big pile of shit and im not a happy customer. There is always problems with their network, and they always say : "it's gonna make us stronger than never, our network will be the fastest in 1 month when "this and that". BS!

I just switched to them so I have no comment on that. But I can say 1 or 2 hours once in a while is not harmful unlike my prev host (I wont name names) had downtime like everyday for at least 10 or 20 minutes that is much more hurtful the once in a while.

edit: their support rocks. always get an answer within an hour

What pisses me off is that I decided to go with them because they were no.1 at the time. I don't care to pay for service and network quality. It's been almost 2 years that I am hosted with them and the first year was great and the downtime they had with Level3 is "understandable" at some point - when it happens only 1 time.

Its always problem over problem for the past 8 months with them. The network latency is shit and you never know when their network will turned to be slow as shit. For the past 2 months, since they are a tier-3, it's not the best network that was promised to me. Where is that bgp4 at&t quwest, etc?

Personally i'm pleased with their noc over ICQ, they are always on time and can help me out most of the time. If it wasn't because of their NOC/Support - I would be doing my hosting with another company. Let's just hope that this situation with LWI will be resolved and and I can sleep well.

(MRTG indicate a 30% drop since last friday and our CSR are overwhelmed by emails saying "i can't access the site, the site is slow, etc...)

Where do you think the superior support comes from =) They aint getting bandwidth prices cheaper than the rest of us (even with using yipes). They have plenty of $$ to provide the support, since they dont seem to pay their bills.

Also only so many Tier 1 providers you can piss off before they wont host you.

Silly question?

Why don't you go to a tier one provider, rent a rack, buy bandwidth and be done with the middle men?

what the hell are you talking about?

Do you even host with them??

I do and ive only been down twice EVER. and its never been for very long.

No Host is up and problem free 100% of the time all year long.

And as a customer having 2 short down times all year long has been acceptable.

Im wondering how many of you people bitching are actually customers?

Frog, I sort of recall you and your down time.

Wasnt it on a virtual server and you or someone was running some hokey my sql cheap ass script??

Its a risk you run with any virtual host. And with all the shitty garage created scripts nowdays you read about a lot of virtuals hosts crashing becasue of this.

Also didnt they take care of it? There doesnt seem to be any problems with that kind of thing anymore?

Boneprone likewhoa is great.
Just that day with problems, I was more upset then others because I had paid for some trafic and it went to waste.

I was also running some weird scripts using mySQL which I removed shorty after the downtime.

Well, here is my 3 cents:

1) Before Sep 11, 2002, their network was fucknig awesome, my sites loaded quick as hell

2) Then came downtime, and ever since i never experienced the same speed

3) Today, down again, right now as I am typing, my site is dead. BUT! THere are sooo many buts to this:

a) Their NOC support is superior , always have been and I love those guys there for how fast they work
b) EVERY hosting company has downtimes. LW has them not so often!

I don't know, but I would be bitch so much if I were you. IT's normal dudes, it's a fucking downtime, so what. Go somewhere else, and you will experience downtime too, I guarantee you. I am sure they are on it, and you bitchin won't help much.

I guess moral of my story is: Yes, they go down here and there, BUT the support comensates it and it's worth sticking around.

... I have to agree, their ICQ support is/was indeed great ... and I never saw any other hosting company moving the whole stuff into a new facility as fast as they did .... we were so impressed, we decided to ship our stuff to miami.

I guess level3, verio and yipes weren't up to "likewhoa" 's standard. So they just keep goign through all of them. They seem to be routing through broadview now.

Hey to like whoa's credit, REGARDLESS of what happened b/t them and verio... Getting rid of Verio was a STRONG play. Verio couldnt deliver a pile of shit if they just ate mexican and a bottle of ex-lax

You haven't seen me talkin shit, have you? I am not here for the spamalicious, hard marketing strategy that most hosts seem to have... I am mostly just around for shits n giggles on GFY.

As for the LWI downtime issue, all I told one guy on icq was I felt a little sorry for him that he had downtime and no explanation from the host as to why... if they had told the guy - hey, our router is fried and the replacement is coming in, that woulda probably kept everyone cool... even if LWI advertises a redundant network setup and BGP4 routing across several upstream providers...

I hear their support is awesome and that's cool. I do think it is a little fucked that they keep changing their network, but that is their perogative and if they can keep the clients happy with it and pull a larger profit from them then fine.

Just my 2 cents.

You guys all sound like the Likewhoa cheering squad!

Downtime is downtime, money is money, I would be out of there so quick your head would spin!

I could care less how nice someone is when they talk to me on ICQ, what I do care about is my sites being up.

You guys need to find out what the hell is going, you are all losing cash.

How bout some peeps who don't get "special deals" pop in here and start posting their experiences?

Boneprone, we know you aren't unbiased. =)

Equinox and Pipecrew both get free hosting from them, in return for sig buttons...

Would be nice not to have the regular cheering squad commenting

I could care less how nice someone is when they talk to me on ICQ, what I do care about is my sites being up.

You guys need to find out what the hell is going, you are all losing cash.

Regards,

Kevin
if you jumped ship everytime there was downtime you'd end up paying 8 bux a gig for no downtime. even then, your sites could still go down.

That might be true for you, but not for most of us, been at the same host for almost 2 years now.

My host will have issues 5 min here 10 min here I can deal with that shit happens, but hours, no way would I put up with that.

Here is the problem if a host goes down for more then 15 min at a time they do not have a failover system in place, even if they lose a router they should have a failover in place, 5 maybe 10 maybe 15 min max to be back up period. Maybe they do have a failover in place then why all the problems?

You guys are down for hours there is no excuse for that. What happens when you are down for 2 hours and the next time and it does not come back up?

I have seen many threads on this board about Likewhoa you guys need to find out the truth and make sure to cover your own ass.

Regards,

Kevin

things have been great with like whoa. didn't notice the sept 11th downtime. my daily stats didnt show anything that would cause me to notice.

the last couple days, there's been an hour each day where traffic is off. traceroutes don't look as healthy the last couple days like they did a month ago, but its still solid. sites are coming up quick, thats what i care about.

looking at this thread you'd think the sky was falling.

When my sites are down the sky is falling to me. When you are down you are closed out of business till you are back up again!

Good luck I hope it all works out for you guys!

Kevin

Look guys, what I'm trying to say here it's:

1.) Im paying for Tier-1 connectivity and I'm getting Tier-2 at the price of a Tier-1. Quite frankly, I don't want to be on Yipes - neither Williams Co. or Cogent Co..

Expl : I've been told by my account rep at LWI that I will only get Verio, AT&T, Qwest and Level3 bandwidth. I based my decision on these facts. When I joined LWI, I've been told that my servers will never be on Cogent or such crap but only on quality Tier-1 providers. - Written on my contract too!

2.) Their network isn't stable, there is always some route problems since Sept. 11 2002.

3.) I don't like the idea of doing business with them when I hear that they aren't paying their bills! This doesn't make me comfortable to host with a company who put all THEIR CLIENTS BUSINESS AT RISK. And it didn't happen only one time, but 2 mother fuckin times.

3.) They've been promising their client that Yipes and Cogent were only temporary - and they'll find other Tier-1 provider very very soon. - It's been 75 days now that we run on cheap ass connections.

4.) I am paying for BGP4 and "redundant connectivity on multiple providers". The BGP4 doesn't work - and the multiple connections my ass! Last september (8th and 11th) when our sites were running slow as shit, they didn't have sufficent redundancy, and we were able to access our sites only 30% of the time. But I WAS PAYING FOR THIS!

In conclusion, im not saying that downtime isn't acceptable. Every host goes down once in a while... But LWI behavior doesn't show me that this company can give me that security and trust that I'm looking for.

You ever notice how these mysterious snipers with a low post count and no homepage link come out during these hosting threads?

This is called dirty pool guys. Cut it out.

I have a small project on the side hosted with likewhoa vhosting.

We get about 5 hours or so of downtime every week with LikeWhoa. it wouldnt be so bad if it wasnt spread out into 30-60 minute bits over the entire 7 day period.

Other than downtime I have no problem with likewhoa. And their website is pretty cool.

Go listen to the funky music.. http://www.likewhoa.com

makes me feel more relaxed about the fact that i'm losing money every time. At least i'm filling the wallets of funky dudes.

Apparently Likewhoa is still down in some places. I can access my sites and ones hosted at likewhoa but some people cannot.

Even the sextracker stats show a large decrease for sites like Pichunter. So many people are still unable to access them

Idiot? My site is up is yours, when you sleep at night do you now if your server is up, I have my phone number listed on my sites if a user has an issue they can call me direct, if I was with Likewhoa right now I would be on the phone a little to much apologizing to my customers.

Do you have number on your site? Or when your customers cant get to your site do they cancel, do you lose money?

All I am saying is find out what is wrong and fix the problem

My link is there I hope you are not talking about me? Just because I dont post as much as the next guy does not mean much. I am not pushing any other host, but I keep seeing this problem and the same cheerleading squad saying "so its down but I get great ICQ support"

I don't get it?

Regards,

Kevin
