Out of curiosity have you actually ever read the whole bible?

I will start off with that I am agnostic, not an atheist - which I do see a lot of people proclaim they are (atheists that is).

I have actually read it, also had a Hebrew version read to me. While I am at it I have read a few other religious tombs (book of Mormon, Koran, etc.).

So have you actually read it?

PS - image inserts or cracks about it being a book of fables and fairy tales really only presents you as foolish as those who take every word literally.

I really doubt you've read the Koran. Perhaps you've read a translation, but I doubt you speak Arabic.

Yes I have.

But it's been a decade or two. So I barely remember a lot of it. My old college roommate used to read it at night, then want to discuss what he read. For him, it was exciting.

No I did not read it in Arabic. I read a translation and when I had questions about portions I was able to ask my cousins husband who's family is Islamic.

No I did not read it all. Just parts in school longggggg ago.

The only thing I remember from catholic school and religion is; "If you look for GOD in a church, you missed the point because GOD is love and is everywhere"

Shukran. And if they get nasty just go: "Imshi" (arab for "get the fuck out of here / get lost")

I've read the bible 5 times through and through. It's an interesting historical document with many of the flights of fancy of many contemporary works. It was common in ancient civilizations to add a lot of pomp and magic to their stories, but it's even more intersting to read the bible and then read contemporary writers such as Josephus who have their own take on things. I was always more interested in the historical standpoints.

fuck. i read the whole lord of the ring's trilogy at one point too, which holds just as much moral value as any religious text. really, why don't we all worship hobbits as angels, hope we die and goto the shire, and fear enternal burning and damnation in mordor? it makes just as much sense....

Ha I was hoping nobody would notice that after I posted. The edit time had lapsed, then I thought well few on gfy would call me on that - a select few. People like yourself or a select number of historian readers, and lastly some role players.

PS - any new pictures lately?

Honestly there is not much fiction in it. Unless you really want to scream fiction every time they use a metaphor or invoke the name/power of god/mosses/etc.

The book is harsh - period. Forget any lolz or whatever again unless you can not get past a metaphor. Example Moses parting the sea of reads or red sea (depending on which translation you like). If read as is, it comes off as some serious lolz. If read more historically and with some understanding of Egyptian warfare - it takes on something entirely different.

Even though this thread is not really about why don't we all worship (insert anything here). Well at times we have had just about every form of god or thing of worship one can imagine anyways. We just happen to be talking about the bible here. A book that if someone actually does read entirely (helps to dig past metaphors) would provide people with a god that not many would really want to worship anyways.
Well perhaps Warchild may - it suits his persona.

Yes it is a must to apply what we know historically when we read such a book. I have often found as well that a lot of the pomp and magic are more often not interpreted correctly in translation - aside from when they then say "god told me, or whatever". Leaders would typically give some reason why everyone is supposed to do something to keep everyone in line.

Yes. Cover to cover. However, it was about 16 years ago.

I've read it quite a few times. I'm just waiting for a good "to screen" adaptation. Old testament would make a fucking kickass michael bay movie. I mean you got demons, floods, fire from the heavens, cities brought to ruin, plagues, sorcerers, flaming swords, angels..giants, war. I mean.... what more could you ask for in a movie?

I have actually read it, also had a Hebrew version read to me. While I am at it I have read a few other religious tombs (book of Mormon, Koran, etc.).

So have you actually read it?

PS - image inserts or cracks about it being a book of fables and fairy tales really only presents you as foolish as those who take every word literally.

I have read the King James Bible twice. The first time was when I was around twelve and the second time was about ten years later.

The Bible, and the Apocrypha... I was raised Catholic, and wanted to really know and understand what was behind it...

Honestly there is not much fiction in it. Unless you really want to scream fiction every time they use a metaphor or invoke the name/power of god/mosses/etc.
There is SOOOOO fucking much fiction in the bible. So many events/places/people it describes are made up or incorrect. And i'm not talking about metaphors etc. It's full of bs. Not sure how you can say there is not much fiction in it.

Dude you act like that whole book is one big metaphor. That everything that is bs right away means it's a metaphor. Ever though of the fact that many of the bs might be exactly that, bullshit?

Replace the bible with lord of the rings. If your whole life you were told that that is what we know as the bible you probably would do the same thing. Call every fiction part a metaphor.

I haven't, I honestly just can't bring myself to be interested in something that so many dumb people live by (these people kill each other over these books, when it's all really just the same fucking story :sigh: ) when it is possible that it's just a big fairy tale anyhow. Maybe I sound ignorant like the rest when I say that, but as long as there is no hard evidence on the whole God thing, I just can't be bothered to get involved with it. If it's so important than it would be something you could not even doubt.. Are you (after shock) saying it is worth the read or no?

And even if the whole thing is true, "love me or I'll fuck you up", what exactly could he possibly do to "fuck you up"? Think about all of the pain, confusion, love, hate, etc. that you go through in your ACTUAL REALITY in REAL LIFE, and tell me what could be worse?
