Yes it is a must to apply what we know historically when we read such a book. I have often found as well that a lot of the pomp and magic are more often not interpreted correctly in translation - aside from when they then say "god told me, or whatever". Leaders would typically give some reason why everyone is supposed to do something to keep everyone in line.
