Cable Vs. Dsl: The Definitive Post
Why does it seem to me that the endless Cable vs. DSL battle will go on forever?
It's like Coke vs. Pepsi, McDonald's vs. Burger King, and Your Mom vs. a Deodorant Stick....the fucking war will never end. I use cable...I always have...but I get the feeling that if I switched tommorrow (which I always tell myself I am going to do) I would have the same amount of quirks and problems and dissatisfaction with customer support. Sheeit....I think at this point I should think about switching to a mouse on a wheel...fuck at least I could buy a snake and watch it eat that little rodent. I mean honestly...have you ever seen a snake eat a cable modem or a DSL line filter? God Bless Snakes and Mice.

there was a debate?
I thought it was brutally obvious that cable is far superior to dsl.

I get 300-400k down on dsl. cable is dependant on how many people are using it. So the more subscribers=less speed. Which is crucial in a major city. But... cable may be better than dsl in areas with low subscribers, whereas dsl speed depends on how close you are to the local loop.

Cable is broken into nodes. There can only be so many people on a given node. There will never be slow speeds, because even if a node becomes maxed out, they can always break it into smaller nodes (unlikely) or boost the node. (probably) let's see what else.... 1. a big thick ass cable, versus two scrawny little phone wires. (shouldn't take rocket science to figure this one out) 2. Cable is readily available to virtually anyone with cable. And even to those without cable.... they'll fucking install the line. 3. Cable is not limited by distance as dsl is. 4. Cable is virtually never down, unless the modem dies or the provider blows a node. 5. Cable is cheaper than dsl.

the crap that your dsl company has been telling you PureMeds about too many cable subscribers = slow speed is nothing but a sales pitch bro... it has no basis in fact.

Yeah...but what is the best speed you've ever received that you can remember?
I remember....way back in my days of Playstation 1 IRC downloading, there was one dude who would consistently transfer to me at unbelievable speeds....like im talking 450mb in 100 minutes. I remember the most amazed I ever was was this one dude from sweden who I swear was the second fastest dude I ever remember downloading from... And finally...about 3 years ago...I remember a guy who had a publically accessible FTP anonymous site who had about 150 gigabytes of every type of software, console game, and vcd there was...always open...always online Ahh...the good ol' days of "unfettered" ISP access.

I've had both cable and adsl in Canada and think adsl is better. Cable seemed slower on average and had more downtime.
But remember there is no right or wrong. Speeds vary depending on your house location, city population etc.

I've used DSL and am now on Cable.
My experience shows that Cable doesn't work a LOT of the time, and is fucking slow as hell during busy hours. DSL is way better. |

I have friends that use cable and they seem to have more times when its not working right. I average 1.2 downstream and 256 upstream on my BellSouth DSL connection. Only when BellSouth first started DSL in Florida did they have a lot of kinks. Recently they seem to have the system running very reliably. We're also on FITL (Fiber In The Loop) which means the DSL connection is running through a fiber connection. The first to be installed in Florida and so far so good.

I thought cable could handle like 30 megabits and adsl was limited to like 5-6 megabits max. So cables sharing with your neighbors wouldn't be an issue.
My damn DSL in aussie with Telstra is constantly down, I mean last month I had 4 days where it just died for 2-8 hours. that was a bad month but it still happens to much. My DSL provider even started a refund policy for people cause they had so much damn downtime. AMP you prick I want your connection I guess I'll have to wait till they lay a 100,000,000,000,000 terabit cable from Aussie to LA Sammy |

use the speedtest at http://www.dslreports.com/tools its more accurate than most I've seen, plus it gives you a push/pull number. I'm usually more interested in the up because most broadband services offer at least close to a megabit down, but only a few actually give a decent up speed...
I've heard that cable is less secure than dsl, and I do remember hellacious amount of network scans, port sniffing yada yada...script kiddies trying out the latest releases on their own ip blocks etc. I've had both and had similar results with both. I think an SDSL connection would be cool...I'm currently shopping for an ISP here in Sacramento, any locals got suggestions...? edit:try out some of those tools on your connections and and post the results...I'd be interested to see which connections fair better as far as packet loss and what not goes...

It depends on location. In Sac the cable is better than DSL. Cable used to be really good around here , nice upload speeds, insane download. Then until At&t took over comcast now i pay more for less as usual with At&t, but it's still better than the DSL.
