Just caught a piece about it on my local news.

Doctors wont do it, but its becoming a big thing.

I dunno about becoming a "big thing"...but if you want more info, try http://www.bmezine.com/ I think the FAQ section has some info on tongue-splitting.

The only other non-standard body mod I have (aside from 9 piercings in various places and 3 tattoos) are 4 scarifications. One is an Eye of Horus, the other three are stars, all on my stomach. They came out pretty well, they look like brands even though they were done with a scalpel. To raise the scar tissue and make it dark, you irritate the cuts immediately after making them (I used vinegar and hydrogen peroxide) and then scrub them daily with an old, clean toothbrush and hydrogen peroxide to remove the scabs.

(duh. edited because I am a dumbass and posted the link to BME before I let the photo load all the way and saw that's where you got it from.)

When a LA news anchor covers something like tongue splitting, its becoming a 'big thing'

mainstream distates how popular something is.

Not me...I'm just jealous! I've been stretching my ears for almost a year and have only gotten to a 6gauge.

I plan to go to 2ga eventually, but the stretches get harder and harder every damn time.

You're probably right. But all that means is that hardcore bodymodders will decide it's no longer cool, once the mainstream knows about it...just like how navel piercings are no longer cool unless you wanna look like Britney.

(I'm in mourning for mine. Had to take it out. It was pierced at 8ga, making it hardcore enough to be "cool", but it started to migrate.

I once knew a guy that was doing that. I only met him a few times.

What he did was he had tied a piece of fishing line thru his tounge piercing hole, and up towards the tip of his tongue. He said he tied it as tight as he could take it.

He said it was extremely painful for the first few days. Extreme Pain. Then after a few days when the pain died down, he would retie it. Again, as tight as he could handle. He said after a few months the tounge would be split.

A few months of extreme pain is all it would take. The guy was a body modifier anyway. He had piercings all over, and metal balls and shit under his skin. So he wasn't a stranger to the pain.

I don't know if he ever succeded with his tongue plitting. I only met him a couple of times. Fuckin' wierdo.

I can't see that getting as big as tats and regular piercings. You've got to be hard-fucking-core to permanently alter your body that way. That is one sub-culture that won't make it to mainstream--which is of course the point. The fucking pain must be incredible.

Don't see it much in LA. More common in Santa Cruz and Bay Area.

I remember years ago how white people would make fun of Africans who did all of that wild shit to their bodies...Making jokes about them running around with bones in their noses...But just like everything else, they end up doing the same shit to themselves that they ridiculed others for and then take it to another extreme.

I have to agree. I have nothing in particular against the mods he went for. I happen to think they are a little too extreme to look cool, and the ears just aren't my thing at all. The guys biggest problem, though, is that he started out ugly.

One of our graphic designers is really into body modifications. We cut his tongue in half ( I have it on tape ) and we hot a major artery. needless to say he almost died. I would definitely say it is hard core !

Getting a piercing that someone else may consider "strange" isn't mutilation. Cutting yourself up with a razor blade is. And yes, that's me.

I have a belly ring..and I don't want to be like Britney

I've had it since I was 16 and it's as if it's not even there anymore. My nose and belly buttom ring are another part of me, to me they go unnoticed.

When I 1st got my nose pierced it kept falling out, so I stuck the backing on it...bad idea. I put it on and it threaded wrong

For yrs. I had the backing in and it wasn't until recently that I was able to get it off.

I was cleaning it one night and out it came with np at all

What is self-mutilation? Why does it happen?

Thanks for posting the info, punkworld. I was just about to post pretty much the same thing.

Cutting, for people who become addicted to it, is a self-soothing mechanism. It sounds bizarre, to someone who has never experienced it, but for someone like me -- I was severely, repeatedly abused as a child, and it left me with dissociative disorder -- the self-harming can serve to bring me back from a very deep dissociative episode. I'm always afraid I'm going to "go away" so far and so deep inside myself that I'll never come out of it again, and I cut to wake myself up. At the same time, the opiates released by the brain in response to injury are calming and soothing.

When I cut, it doesn't really hurt. I feel the razor part my skin, or the impact of my head against the wall (I've also self-injured by hitting my head against the wall, with a brick, and with a hammer), but it doesn't register as pain because I'm dissociated and "checked out."

Anyway, that photo is from several months ago. I don't cut very often now. I used to cut almost every day -- for a while I was afraid of sleeping, and the only way I could sleep was if I cut first. Therapy is helping, along with meds, and the fact that both the people who abused me are now dead of old age.
