What's your biggest flaw when working?

Mine is perfectionism. I always want to make projects perfect before I launch them, and since that's virtually impossible, I always end up having to launch projects I'm still somewhat unsatisfied with.

So what's yours?

pretty much the same. I think everytime I edit it's going to suck and people are going to hate it. 9 times out of 10 they love it, but I always feel like it could be better.

Also, I get distracted very easily. It's difficult to focus...

.. brb, titties just walked by the office.

Sometimes just starting. Then occasionally distractions or boredom. When I do start and get working what has the best chance of screwing it up is pain, then it is really hard to keep mind on a project.

Stopping... I sit at my computer until I literally can no longer function, but still keep trying to thus making things harder on myself sometimes.

I can get stuff done for others in hours, but when I do it for myself it takes days (sometimes weeks). I also have a plasma in my office, so before you know it I'm watching something and lost an hour of the day.

I was just like you & still have a hard time disciplining myself enough NOT to do that anymore.

Perfection is impossible & changes schedules, costs more, bloats things, etc.

Read this book, its free online... definitely got me going in the right direction, geared toward web development in general but also applies to a lot of other things http://gettingreal.37signals.com/toc.php

When I work for myself - lack of focus. If I'm doing repetitive tasks, I long for creative tasks, and viceversa.

And when I work for others - insecurity. If I'm doing repetitive tasks, I feel I'm not efficient enough and that slows me even more (I do not lower quality bar though), and if I'm doing creative tasks, I feel I'm not good enough and redo things dozens of times.

That's why I love photo retouching, just the right amount of repetition and creativity, and that's why my favourite tasks are database related... there's just one right way of getting that done, heh.

my main problem at this point is... actually there are a few

The main one being I lack ambition badly now. The other one would be a huge lack of motivation. Another would be the fact that I want to learn more, but if I plan to learn something that's all it is.. a plan. I need something to motivate me and give me back the ambition that I had years ago.

The whole learning thing I think would work if there was someone that had offered to teach me things. That way I can listen, let everything sink in, try the new thing(s) etc.., but that has never happen. At least no recently. For the exception of a few small tips there has been no real learning on my part and I guess that is also a cause of my lack of motivation/ambition. I'm willing to learn new things and try new things, but I just have to get my motivation back which I'm working on.

The last couple weeks I have been teaching myself beginners video editing, just basic stuff. How to chop up and splice, transitions, various file types... it gave me the little boost that I was lacking for quite sometime. So maybe when we are stuck doing repetitive things so often, we need to force ourselves to learn something new so that we get a bump in motivation and inspiration.

I may have to try to force myself to learn something new. Another thing that kills my motivation is making less cash and working more so in the end it makes me work less since I don't see the point. With all of that I create myself some financial problems which of course I have created myself more after setting myself free of that, had to be done though.

Another idea is to take a class at a community college, maybe about something that interests you or something business-related or technology related. It may not exactly turn into more money for you, but it will keep your mind working and give you something to do a few times a week... a way to get out of the house and stay active, basically.

that's true. Getting out of the house would help. I'll have to look into something like that.

I am the same way, but I decided it's likely better to get it online even if it's half assed to start with than having the site sit there dead.

I can learn stuff like that with out to much problems.. Like learning a new website script or some new software, but when it comes to trying to learn programing or something like that where you have to read a lot to do it. Well, I just can't keep at it and stay focused.. I dunno what it is, but I hate learning stuff that I have to sit down and read how too's.. I just like to do it and get my hands dirty.
