why do fitness gyms always have to do the fuckaround?

saw a new gym opening in the area, looked interesting, so of course I wonder what the price is..... and of course, there are no prices to be seen anywhere on their website, they want you to do the whole "book an appointment for your personal tour"

of course that is always the sales pitch where they want to suck you in to a contract and an initiation fee etc..... why the fuck can't they just name a price, and let me pay by the month, no stress, no hassles?

at least 24hour fitness had a special on a while back that I was able to sign up to a month to month no initiation fee deal, but they usually don't even offer that.... and most other places want a ridiculous high fee for just one month membership (say you are only going to be in a city for a month)

They probably do it because it's one of the best ways to get mass clients. I know what you are saying though... as a consumer, if the website of a particular service does not offer prices, I move onto the next service.

If adult websites could charge like gyms, we'd all be twice as rich.

Yep, sign up for a year in advance or authorize monthly recurring with no end date, and then you access the members' area three times and never return

Don't go to such a fancy gym unless you care about the spa services or if they have an Olympic sized swimming pool or something special that is important to you. The gym within walking distance of my house is small but has good equipment, lots of free weights and even teaches brazilian jiu jitsu and martial arts upstairs. Cost me about $330 for the whole year.

They do it because that most people will stop going after a couple of months. Within a month of two of that they would cancel and stop paying. This way they get you with an up front fee and you are required to pay the full contract even if you quit.

The gym I went to even told said that the contract has no real outs in it and even if I die my family will need to bring in a death certificate in order to cancel the contract.

I used to belong to a gym that was a bitch to cancel from. It took me three months and endless phone calls to cancel. I know three other people that had the same problem. They would bill them every month and every month they would call and complain and explain that they have canceled. They get a credit then they get charged again the next month. If we did that it would be headline news.

I was paying $35/month at my old gym and there was a signup fee and a 2 year contract. Now I switched to a bigger, newer gym with better equipment for roughly $12/month. If you go in and don't let the salesperson fuck around with you, you can usually call them on their bullshit with the signup fee.

It usually includes a session or two with a shitty personal trainer that you don't need if you've been to a gym before and shit like that. If they try to fuck around with you and overcharge you, go somewhere else. Leave your number for them to call when they want to give you a real offer and just walk away just like you would when you're buying a car.

If you're only in town for a month, you'll always get fucked on the price for that because they usually want at least a year long commitment.

that is what pisses me off, it seems like all of them figure that one month is worth like $99 or something, it's a joke, and if you want to pay by the day it is even worse

I work in a gym as a fitnessinstructor

You pay € 40 per month, there's a 1 time registration fee of € 25 and that's it
It's an all-inn card with no restrictions..

A year card is € 300 and ofcourse the 1 time reg fee of € 25 cool price or what??

There's a new 24 hour gym that opened out here (SnapFitness.com) that is a flat fee of $35 a month (for single, or $50/month for joint membership), no contracts, no sign-up fees. You don't pay your monthly bill, you don't get access to the club (which is via swiping a card at the door).

I was tired of paying $55 a month at another gym and they harass by calling all the time to see if I'm interested in more classes, getting a friend to join (which equals a free tshirt for me or some bullshit), etc etc.

Do you like them? I went into one near me and they really turned me off by having a kinda creepy-looking personal trainer and hard-selling me and getting peeved when I wanted to read their contract before signing it.

Thats what works. Every gym I've ever been a member of practices that art of selling.

I love my gym. None of that hard selling BS. People who go here have heard word of mouth and don't need to be "sold"

www.equinoxfitness.com

It's worth every penny. If you have one by you I suggest you check them out. It's worth every penny of the monthly membership.

No where is the adage "you get what you pay for" more applicable than gyms.

What I pay and what I get are worth far more than those 20 dollar a month shit holes.

Not sure where you live, but they have these in most metropolitan cities.

cheers

airek

gym memberships are the only thing worse than buying a car. what we need is a forum where people post the price they paid. you have to hagle. They had a deal at 24 hour fitness buy 2 years and get one year free with a $25 annual renewal. so I paid like $700 but basically its a lifetime membership. Under $3 month now. But the problem is I moved and its 15 minute drive to the gym so I waste 30 minutes driving to workout for an hour cause Im too cheap to buy another membership. So I figure I lose 2 hours week of work. or probably close to 100 hours year driving.

but most people join and end up going for a few weeks and never canceling cause they dont want to admit that they arent going to workout. I wonder what percentage of members pay and end up not going more than 10 times year. I would guess its as high as 50%

I like them, they are not the most upscale, but they are ok and lots of locations

I wouldn't go in for a membership though, you will get the royal fuckaround, but what I did was keep checking their website every month and they often will have an online special that you can sign up directly with your credit card and escape from some of the b.s. initiation fees and contracts or whatever

I signed up to 24 hour fitness again a few months ago online and the special that month was an unlimited clubs membership with no contract for $29.99 a month and no inititiation fee, just first and last month up front, one month notice at any time to cancel

online signup is the only way to go

Been working out at 24 Hour Fitness for years now and it varies from gym to gym. The one I am at now is walking distance which is great and it is one of the largest ones in the country. When they first opened I was not happy about all the trainers that would tie up equipment and leave things just laying about but, they are getting so much better now. Less trainers and equipment gets put away. It is never crowded and they have some machines that I have never seen before. I have never had the hard sell from them and once froze my membership for a year when I was not close to a facility. No problems with it at all.

Peak Fitness in Charlotte rocks. Their posted prices are much HIGHER than what they are when you sit down and talk to them about their specials. I signed up on a 2-year, prepaid membership for $225 ($9 and change per month). I could have gone month-to-month for $25/month.

Now I need to find a trainer there that can actually kick my ass in a workout. So far I am not impressed...
