I haven't used it, but http://www.elgg.org looks cool. Kind of a facebook-esque open source social networking platform written in PHP.

Definitely use a script you can manage yourself, and not one of the services. Ning was fantastic and simple, until they pulled support for adult a couple weeks back. Building your user base will take longer if you do it yourself, but it'smuch safer, and the users will be YOUR users.

Sure a lot of the RAC and script lance Indians claim they know what they are doing. Look at their example sites. Most are terrible, and barely customized worth a shit. They are clueless.

Iève used phpfox and it's great, dolphin is easier to use. If you want to do it for real you need to bust it up and learn Joomla. There are so many cool aps for Joomla it's a great program to build your social network.

With that said nothing beats having the best programer around build a custom backend. www.inkednation.com ;-)

I used to use Mambo an age ago so could get into Joomla... I think I may need to hit you up with more questions if thats ok?

Not sure really, I only installed the trial and really liked it, but I am already pretty swamped with sites I dont take care of to add another one to the list.

Yea I've been looking at elgg since you posted it. It may be between this and a modded Joomla job as JF mentioned above.

This is a mainstream project btw.

NO!!!

Joomla sucks for social networks. Drupal is MUCH, MUCH better suited for that purpose.
