What Social Networking platform do you recommend?

Looking for something robust with good support.

Cheers

Mike Semen 12-17-2008 10:25 AM

Bumpety bump.

Not sure what you mean, but if what you are looking for is a script then google Social Engine.
I think it´s the best around right now.

ideaworx 12-17-2008 11:15 AM

Dzoic is what we been trying, will report back results here in the next 30 days

I haven't used it, but http://www.elgg.org looks cool. Kind of a facebook-esque open source social networking platform written in PHP.

Iscari0t 12-17-2008 11:21 AM

Definitely use a script you can manage yourself, and not one of the services. Ning was fantastic and simple, until they pulled support for adult a couple weeks back. Building your user base will take longer if you do it yourself, but it'smuch safer, and the users will be YOUR users.

LeRoy 12-17-2008 11:22 AM

Boonex is cool and free :) heres a site with it on it http://mymarijuanaspace.com/

DK 12-17-2008 11:24 AM

Boonex is nothing but headaches and bugs. PhPFox FTW!

Aren't they hard to get support on?

It is nice. I have played with it a bit. However, it is also hard to find support for it.
Sure a lot of the RAC and script lance Indians claim they know what they are doing. Look at their example sites. Most are terrible, and barely customized worth a shit. They are clueless.

Jman 12-17-2008 11:30 AM

Iève used phpfox and it's great, dolphin is easier to use. If you want to do it for real you need to bust it up and learn Joomla. There are so many cool aps for Joomla it's a great program to build your social network.

With that said nothing beats having the best programer around build a custom backend. www.inkednation.com ;-)

Thanks JF. This is what I was hitting you up about a while ago :) I used to use Mambo an age ago so could get into Joomla... I think I may need to hit you up with more questions if thats ok?

Thanks also everyone else. I'll look into the other apps too.

Not sure really, I only installed the trial and really liked it, but I am already pretty swamped with sites I dont take care of to add another one to the list.

Bumping my old post because nothing mentioned so far beats elgg.

Sites running elgg:
http://eduspaces.net/
http://www.rucku.com/
http://www.snippr.de/social/

Yea I've been looking at elgg since you posted it. It may be between this and a modded Joomla job as JF mentioned above.

This is a mainstream project btw.

Cheers for the input all...

NO!!!

Joomla sucks for social networks. Drupal is MUCH, MUCH better suited for that purpose.

Agreed, Alberta Stars is entirely custom programmed and kicks ass :thumbsup

PornMD 02-16-2009 01:12 AM

Are any of these really good for customizing the look/feel of the site on or would it be better to get custom coded for that? Just curious as I've mulled over the thought of doing a ghettoish network on one of my more ghettoish domains. :)

doridori 02-16-2009 01:36 AM

http://sourceforge.net

sysk 02-16-2009 01:39 AM

Ning.com if you don't need customization at the code level and if it's not an adult network ;)
