Nice! I'll have to pick those up. I have a new wireless Ergo keyboard that I usually use on my lap, so it's lower. It seems to help. The elbow pad/wraps seem to help the most, but keeping the splints on for a few days at a time really helps your wrists heal from damage. It lasts for a while, then the pain comes back.

I've noticed the elbow pain is mostly from leaning my elbow on a desk all the time. Cuts off circulation and probably does some internal nerve damage in the process. I'm not too sure on this.

27+ years and counting. The past 12+ years have been between 10 to 18 hours per day or more.

Also, it is probably one of the main causes, but side-sleeping (with your arm raised so you're head rests on a pillow that is on top of your arm) does some shoulder damage, which then radiates down the arms, and cuts off circulation to the arm and hands. Years of doing this will have a pretty big impact on things as well.

Did the surgery help? The elbow wraps seem to help.

Hi Voodoo,

I feel your pain! Let me ask you - does the expert mouse and other gear really work for you? I have tried various things like that in the past but I find they tended to slow me down. Do you recommend them?

I use a Razer Death Adder mouse for accuracy, not comfort. It does hurt my hand, but is a great mouse for precision. The elbow wraps help. The wrist splints help get the circulation going to the hands, makes your hands tingle a little. The hand heat wraps seemed to help also, but they didn't last long.

Honestly the most relief I have found is if I can manage to sleep on my back with my hands at my sides, and wear the splints to bed for about 4 or 5 days straight. They help keep from causing more damage when working, but they are bulky and difficult to work around. But wearing them to sleep definitely helps if you can manage to not turn onto your shoulder(s).

What I've found is just changing things up really helps. Every month or so I move my desk around, change my chair height, buy a different mouse, change the height of my monitor, etc.

Keeps you from molding into one position.

My dad had carpel tunnel surgery a while back. Developed it from years of squeezing an ambu bag during anesthesia.

I always worried from years of ten-key doing accounting and then doing computer work that I would end up with it. I also tend to sleep with an arm up under my pillow. I noticed morning numbness in my hands from sleeping with my wrists bend downward at night. Started doing daily exercises of bending my wrists back, etc.

With all that, instead.. I developed trigger finger in my left hand...primarily my index and middle finger. Doc said that it's likely from years of <alt><tab>ing. Had to have cortisone shots in my hand about 6 weeks ago for it.

go figure.

the expert mouse is great once you get used to it you'll never wanna go back...you can also change between keys so you use different fingers everytimes....

the workrite keyboard/mouse trey is awesome i can now almost lie down on my chair and work great....
im about to get this shit too
which will make my workstation almost %100 ergonomic you can't do better then that...if this doesnt help maybe DWBs "hand stretching & exercise" will help ;)

I used to have problems with my pinky and ring finger going numb a few years back. Went to a specialist, did some nerve gliding exercises and was trouble-free since. I highly encourage you googling "nerve gliding exercises". It'll loosen up the nerves going through your elbow.

Let me try to put the exercise into words.

1. Arm straight in front of you, pointing forward. Hand angled up, palm facing forward.
2. Move your forearm 90 deg up while keeping your hand angled up.
3. Rotate your hand forward. The end position is as if you were holding a tray. 3 right angles between body/upper arm, upper/lower arm, lower arm/hand.
4. Move your entire arm to the side of your body, keeping the previous posture.
5. Extend your lower arm down, so that your arm is straight. Keep your hand flexed.
6. Rotate your hand from pointing down to pointing up.

Repeat the whole thing about 10 times, every time pay attention that you flex your hand to its max. reach and don't stop flexing while you move your arm.

I did this exercise for about 3 weeks, solved the numbness in my fingers. This may or may not work for you.

Although for some of you the damage might be done, I've found that working out your wrists, forearms and upper arms can protect against and prevent such injuries. I spend upwards of 10 hours a day in front of a computer most days and have been in the field of tech from '94.

Simple low weight dumbbells are inexpensive and I'm sure that most of you can surf and click with either hand while working out the other.

15 minutes (doing wrist curls, forearm builders and bicep/tricep curls) for each arm each day can work wonders in building up the tendons, ligaments, muscles and joints. (See a doc before you do if you already have pain. You don't want to aggravate an injury that's already there.)

Additionally, I don't use any special ergonomic keyboards and mice, but I do make sure that my posture and arm positions are correct when working for long periods.
