I hate to be Mr. Negative but...

Remember how united the USA was after 9-11? I thought then it was a new day and America was going to head in a new POSITIVE direction as all Americans stood together. Then it all fell apart.

Do you think the people can keep this excitement right now and really help bring change to the country? Or will it fizzle again and go back to the same old same old?

The main difference being that George Bush is a retard and a puppet of his corporate bosses, whereas Obama appears to be the real deal.

The US is hardly united. It may be 53-47 or so but that is hardly united. Obviously people on the left are enthusiastic right now but that does not mean that there is more unity than there was yesterday.

Obama only won by a few million votes, so there really isn't much unity going around.

But the problem was this country was bankrupted by bad government and poor policy decisions that have left the American people struggling. All we ask is that those policies be undone and people made to feel they have a fair shot again.

Heck, If Obama and the Democratic Congress and Senate can just roll back 50% of the shit Bush did, I'll be happy.

the only people who voted for obama were seniors. the rest of the demographics voted for obama (source CNN). old people stuck in their ways, whether they didnt vote because he's black, or they're old money, or whatever, they will always vote with the old white guy.

i don't think it will fizzle, i think this guy will unite people who matter, that is young, influencial people, the people under 65 still in the workforce, who are the ones holding the reigns to the country.

all the debbie downers will still talk shit when in two years everything is not disneyland, when in fact it will take many, many years to fix the country.

I think you missed what happened after 9/11. The country and the world was united but Bush and the neo cons used that unity to push their agenda. Had a person like Obama been president I think we would see a very different world right now.

9/11 was a defining time that a great man as president could have changed the wold for the better. Instead Bush instead used it to divide us.

Perhaps in the pussy states, but not in the midwest. You would have thought it was one big family after 9-11, all flying American flags anywhere they could. Not afraid of anything and wanted the heads of those who pulled the attack.

most predict that the economy is going to bad for at least another year and things will start looking better in 2010, so Obama or no Obama it's gonna be tough for the ordinary people

I, on the other hand am really glad that Obama won - it simply means that the World is moving in the right direction

Bush squandered the goodwill from 9/11.

Obama is much smarter than Bush. It will take a long time to get out of the hole Bush dug for us, but Obama will make enough progress that even his doubters will be convinced to work with him to accomplish what needs to be done.

You cannot have unity of purpose if there is a fundamental disagreement about what needs to be done. If the Democrats had nominated a moderate then I think the country could have been united but you cannot expect the whole country to unite around someone as far to the left as Obama.

Certainly there is a lot of enthusiasm on this board for Obama but that does not translate into the whole country being behind him. Many people deeply disagree with his plans for the country and they are not likely to jump for joy and follow him down the big government path with clasped hands and a smile on their face.

I was still living in SF at the time and I remember there was a shortage of flags...everyone had one of those small flag pins, and had a flag on their car, outside their house etc etc...

I even remember having a friend call me in the middle of the day to tell me she found a shop that just restocked on flags and asked if I wanted her to buy me one...

There was def a feel of "unity" for a little while...but as the dust settled and decisions were made you saw that feeling subside to one of wtf are we doing?...

If Obama does everything or makes inroads with what he promised, the next election could be a landslide easily...

The DOW will need to be over 13,000 by then, but it can be a good measuring stick on if he will get re-elected. He seems to have the integrity to stick to the plan.

Obama is not as far left as the attack ads portray him to be. His cabinet and advisors will be pretty solid.

There are a lot of "Reagan" Democrats. I think there will be a lot of "Obama" Republicans before he is done.

If he governs from the center then you may be correct, but there is nothing in his history or in his stated policy positions which would indicate he intends to govern from the center. I hope I am wrong.

I've been saying this for while, but look at how he ran his campaign. It was virtually flawless. He proved he knows how to pick the right people, make the right decisions, and motivate his people. If he can run the country like that, I see good things.

I liked his speech tonight. He wasn't celebratory. He looked like he was determined to deliver on a promise.

Well, everyone raised their fists together yelling "get Osama Bin Laden!!!" and Bush went "you know, he's not really a priority.. I don't know where he is. We're going into Iraq now." and a lot of people went "huh??"

Then came the lies about WMD's that half the country believed, half didn't.... and so forth. Spiral ensues.

Obama will use the "unity" to put more troops in Afghanistan and maybe even Pakistan.

There will only be surface changes everything else will stay the same.

Yeah and all the flag making factories in China had to keep their slaves a few extra hours every day to fill all the orders.

I was half expecting the US to nuke the ME after 9/11.

Surprised they showed so much restraint.

People will always display American flags and Remember 9/11 bumper stickers for generations to come. I doubt anyone will be wearing an "Obama in '08" or "CHANGE" t-shirts in 6 months.

When all the promise checks start to bounce and the unrealistic expectations put on Obama doesn't come to fruition there's going to be a major unravelling and people will start pointing fingers. There might be a lot of unification right now but I think more now than ever in the history of the U.S. was the turnout of ignorant voters in the electoral this high.
