I dream of a hallway.... dark, paint chipping off the brick walls, and narrow.... maybe 4 feet wide.... more of an alleyway I guess... and a large, several hundred pound hulking monster on all fours, skinned.... the muscle and tendons exposed.... with rows of fourteen inch razor teeth... salivating.... and staring straight at me with evil dark blood red eyes and malice..... waiting to leap..... yet I just stand there.... and it waits....

im in the back of an orange pickup truck. i cant jump out and it is heading for a cliff....i pass a tree and under it is some old lady sitting in a rocking chair laughing and waving at me....the truck goes over the hill and i wake up when it hits bottom.

Oh Pink, this is just a symptom of your fear of making wrong choices. You think that somehow this little mistake or that one will be very detrimental to your life. It's not the case. There is no cliff Pink. You're going to be just fine

The one recurring dream I have is very bizarre. It happens in different settings, but the recurring part is that I'm chewing gum (which I rarely do in real life). I spit out the gum, but there is always more left in my mouth. I get to the point where I am reaching into my mouth and pulling out wads of gum, but there is always more stuck in my back teeth (evidently, it grows).

Very bizarre. And very annoying.

What's it mean? I've always wondered.

Clearly a case of inadequacy. Underneath all of your niceness there is a part of you that suspects these damn dwarfs have a bigger penis than you and that they're after your mom. Naturally you kick the shit out of them.

You have to note that all body parts aside from exceptional cases, are proportional. That is, these dwarfs have dwared penises and you have nothing to fear. Your mother has no interest in fucking dwarfs anyway.

I have this one too Tera.... except for me it's not gum, it's broken teeth. I hate this dream..... the more I spit out, the more there is.... just like you said... it's like it grows.

I used to have this dream as a kid:

I'm in an old time corner shop. There is a penny gumball machine and next to it, a hole in the floor. I keep putting pennies in the machine and the gum and pennies keep falling in the hole. Eventually I get fed up and reach into the hole to retrieve my lost pennies/gumballs. I get down in the hole and suddenly I'm sitting on top of the door to my bedroom. The floor is a swamp with alligators and all I can think of is trying to get to my bed on the other side of the room. I think I sit there for a while and either leap for the bed or just sit there and give up. Then I'm standing on a hill. There are pebbles and sticks rolling down the hill passing by a log cabin with a flower garden in front. The sticks get bigger and bigger and eventually are huge logs that start by crushing the flower bed and eventually destroying the cabin.

Inevitably after having this dream I'd wake up and be sick. Usually with the flu, vomiting, the squits, and a fever. Bizarre.

In my adulthood I have had a recurring dream that I go looking for my first boyfriend and we meet up and end up getting back together. I think most people have that sort of dream though don't they, regardless of how happy they are in their lives as they are.

There is one recurring dream that I have had through the years. The place changes but I am always jumping high and I mean about 100 feet off the ground. I jump over things such as buildings, electric poles and trees. It is a good feeling when I jump too and I am never scared.

yeah, this one really sucks.... it actually wakes me up. I wake up trying to spit out mouthfuls of broken shards of teeth....

I have had broken teeth dreams too and that's one of the reasons I hate going to the dentist. Usually it starts with one tooth and I usually spit out all my broken teeth by the end of the dream. They are not common but I have them every few months or so.

Hmm, it's not so much meaning that we're searching for here. Freud writes that their are several stages in development from childhood to adolescence and then to adulthood. To reach self-actualization (to know yourself and your full potentials) you have to work through each stage successfully.

One of Freuds stages is the 'oral' stage, in which you learn to gratify yourself by putting things in your mouth. Every child goes through this. Something traumatic may have happend to you during this stage of development and you're likely suppressing it. For your sake, I will not speculate in public what I think might have happend.

While unsuccessfully researching my gum dream before, I found something that said dreams of rotting teeth or teeth falling out mean you feel guilty about lying or deceiving someone... something like that.

Does that apply? Especially to the frequency that you are having the dream? Not so much any more, but more before?

I really don't think that's what my gum thing is about though.

Interesting. I don't think you're really on track though. And remember, I am trying to get the gum OUT of my mouth (it's already in there). I am certainly not gratifying myself by putting anything in there.

I was never abused as a child, in any way, if that's what you are getting at.

Beastiepoo, in your last sentence you say that 'most people have that sort of dream, regardless how happy they are'. This is NOT true. Get that notion out of your mind IMMEDIATELY. NORMAL people do not have these types of dreams.

Now for the diagnosis. Your dream is very complex and needs to be sectioned into smaller pieces. The first part concerning the pennies and gumball machine indicates that you're simply afraid of being a popper, of being a failure, of being 'penniless'. Not only that, but you want MORE than what you put into things. For a penny you want a giant gumball when you know it going to be at least a quarter. But you reach in to get your greedy little fingers on the gum and this is when you're returned to your bedroom, sorta like being sent to your room after you've done something bad.

The first dream could mean anything, including what you are evaluating it to mean. The point is that I haven't had it since I was about 12 and EVERY TIME after I had it, I got the flu. Really the flu. Home from school for 3 days, chucking up my guts, eating chicken soup...flu.

I have to disagree that the second dream indicates a profound unhappiness in my relationship because I am genuinely the happiest I have ever been. I DID have this dream before I was happy, but I still have it now from time to time. I am completely content in my life as it is. I'm about to celebrate my 3rd anniversary with my husband and our first child is due in January. I could understand and agree if there was some aspect of my relationship with which I was unhappy, but genuinely, there isn't. I've also read some research that says that dreams about past love/sex relationships have more to do with uncertainty in other aspects of life rather than your current relationship - usually job or financial stress.

Just adding fuel to the fire I suppose. I don't mean to contradict you, you've certainly done more reading and study than I have but I have always found Freud to be a load of crap.

I've never understood why people give any creedence to Freud. He had an obviously neurotic obsession with attempting to explain every pathology in existence with obtuse theories of childhood sexuality. Freud practiced the absolute opposite of good science.. he came to a conclusion and then played procrustes with the data until it fit what he wanted to believe.

C. G. Jung had a much better ideas about dreams. He theorized that most dreams are compensatory mechanisms which serve to rebalance the psyche. In compensatory, balance-restoring dreams, a person who has been humiliated by someone he admires may dream that he is praised or befriended by one of his heroes... perhaps a movie star or athlete; and the dream will help to restore his self-esteem. Likewise, if on some occasion a person has been overly smug about himself, he may dream that one of his heroes snubs him; and the dream will have a disquieting, sobering effect. Compensatory dreams serve to moderate the extremes of our ego's pride or debasement.

Dreams which are repetitive in nature are usually trying to call the dreamers attention to some psychological problem which he or she needs to resolve. Not necessarily a major psychological illness, but if you are having repetitive dreams, especially if they are negative in nature, you can be sure that there is something at least slightly out of whack.

I know a bit about dreams but I have a friend & teacher who I write regularly who knows much more. He, too, needs to talk to a priest.... or create a fictional dialogue in which whatever it is is given voice."

Take it with a grain of salt, as she indicated she is only making guesses from a 2nd person account - a personal or telephone interview is needed for these sorts of things - but I thought you two might be interested in what she had to say.

Its interesting what the mind will do of its own accord sometimes! I wouldn't have brought it up with her were it not for the fact that two people reported having almost exactly the same repetitive dream. I thought it might be some sort of common symbology she'd be able to easily identify - like the dreams which are obviously compensatory I talked about. I guess not.

I get to the point where I am reaching into my mouth and pulling out wads of gum, but there is always more stuck in my back teeth (evidently, it grows). Very bizarre. And very annoying. There is a penny gumball machine and next to it, a hole in the floor. I keep putting pennies in the machine and the gum and pennies keep falling in the hole. Eventually I get fed up and reach into the hole to retrieve my lost pennies/gumballs. I get down in the hole and suddenly I'm sitting on top of the door to my bedroom. The floor is a swamp with alligators and all I can think of is trying to get to my bed on the other side of the room. I think I sit there for a while and either leap for the bed or just sit there and give up. Then I'm standing on a hill. There are pebbles and sticks rolling down the hill passing by a log cabin with a flower garden in front. The sticks get bigger and bigger and eventually are huge logs that start by crushing the flower bed and eventually destroying the cabin. Inevitably after having this dream I'd wake up and be sick. Usually with the flu, vomiting, the squits, and a fever. Bizarre. In my adulthood I have had a recurring dream that I go looking for my first boyfriend and we meet up and end up getting back together. I think most people have that sort of dream though don't they, regardless of how happy they are in their lives as they are. __________________ Dammit! My timing SUCKS! You're only reconfirming my belief that Freud had NO IDEA what he was on about. The first dream could mean anything, including what you are evaluating it to mean. The point is that I haven't had it since I was about 12 and EVERY TIME after I had it, I got the flu. Really the flu. Home from school for 3 days, chucking up my guts, eating chicken soup...flu. I have to disagree that the second dream indicates a profound unhappiness in my relationship because I am genuinely the happiest I have ever been. I DID have this dream before I was happy, but I still have it now from time to time. I am completely content in my life as it is. I'm about to celebrate my 3rd anniversary with my husband and our first child is due in January. I could understand and agree if there was some aspect of my relationship with which I was unhappy, but genuinely, there isn't. I've also read some research that says that dreams about past love/sex relationships have more to do with uncertainty in other aspects of life rather than your current relationship - usually job or financial stress. Just adding fuel to the fire I suppose. The place changes but I am always jumping high and I mean about 100 feet off the ground. I jump over things such as buildings, electric poles and trees. It is a good feeling when I jump too and I am never scared.

Compensatory dreams serve to moderate the extremes of our ego's pride or debasement. Dreams which are repetitive in nature are usually trying to call the dreamers attention to some psychological problem which he or she needs to resolve. Not necessarily a major psychological illness, but if you are having repetitive dreams, especially if they are negative in nature, you can be sure that there is something at least slightly out of whack.
