Draining anal glands

Yes, I know it is a lovely thought to wake up to but has any dog owners here had to do this? I have had dogs all my life and they have never had an issue but my pug is giving out the most foul odour ever and researching it appears to be her glands. Has anybody dealt with this and am I really best going to the vet for reasons beyond just being really gross?

Ah, what we do for our furry friends.

I have heard of this.

Always best to goto a vet...

If my ass were leaking, I'd goto a doctor :D

Oh yes, I have dealt with it.

First of all, the food you feed them is what makes them smell bad, and what makes their anal glands build up. If the food is too soft, their stools will be soft, and they need hard stools in order to squeeze their anal glands right when they poop. ewww

You can try it yourself (I couldn't manage that), or take them to a vet.

When I took my dog to the vet, and she put on her gloves and started squeezing them out, she squirt herself in the face and hair. I swear, it was terrible.

But mostly its the food. I switched to this stuff called Canidae, and within 30 days your dog's coat will be shinier and the smell will go away. It is amazing.

A lot of times it is the cheap corn in the dog food. Most dogs are somewhat allergic to corn and will have hair and skin problems. It is why they smell. Its their food, and what happens to the anal glands.

i take my labs every 3 months. Apparently it is something dogs used in the wild but forgot how to do it once they became domesticated. Some dogs will rub their butts across the floor if it gets itchy back "there"

Your dog can get clogged anal glands and get an infection which will then possibly cause an abcess, and get very sick, go take her to the vet and have them express her glands.. Its cheaper than the infection. My ex wife was a vet tech..

You should take him to the vet to be squeezed. Trust me, this is not something you'll want to do yourself. Plus, the vet will know if it's impacted or infected. They can actually rupture. Eeek!
I agree with the person who said you need to change the food too. Better food = happier pooch! Good luck Sarah!

That did it for me. I read that and picked up the phone and made and appointment for Saturday morning.

If it is the food then the other dog isn't having an issue with it. The other dog is such a picky eater that it took me nearly two years to find food she will actually eat every time I put down. I mix it up with some wet food and some hard crunchy stuff too.

I am assuming they are different breeds?

We have miniature pinschers, it took me a while to find the info but apparently they have a bad reaction to corn, that specific breed. Our little one had patches of hair missing when we got her, and the change in food cleared it up.

I actually need to order some of the good food right now, Canidae, because we have to mail order it and we ran out. I swear by that stuff, and the dogs go crazy for it. I have been giving them dog chow, poor guys, and it only takes a few days and I see the changes in them. Its summer, and they stink terrible. They poop more and everything.

Yeah, the pug is the one with the butt issue. From what I have read, pugs get this fairly often. The other one is a spaniel and is super picky with eating but doesn't have any issues. I will see what the vets says.

I had a friend with a pug and she let her groomer (vet based) do it. If you let it go too long the dog will drag its ass and do it in your home and that you DON'T want. Its gross but necessary with certain breeds.

I worked at a vet's office for a few years when I was in high school.

I personally saw my boss get some anal gland juice sprayed in his mouth.
