How good of a cook are you?
I'm not too bad in the kitchen. I have a few signature dishes, but nothing really too complicated. A mean pot of chili, asparagus penne, and arguably the best grilled cheese sandwich in the western hemisphere.

How do you grill cheese? Doesn't the pot get greasy????????
Is there a special spatual for picking up the melted cheese and moving it onto the bread. Maybe if we put the cheese onto the bread before we cook it! |

I am pretty darn good. Though, I am more of a good home cook type of cook then anything gourmet. Simply because that is the stuff I like to eat. I have a pretty good grilled cheese too.

I used to be decent - but so many years of bachleor-hood has made me lazy. Sometimes i make really awful stuff when experimenting.
However, chicken thighs (bones stripped), with teryaki sauce drizzled over it, and wrapped tight in aluminum foil at 250 for a few hours is quite nice over rice and steamed veges - cheap as hell, too.

I have a good buddy who does everything from scratch, and I mean everything. If he needs a bernaise sauce or a hollandaise sauce... he makes them from the base ingredients and NOT from a package.
That's what I call talent in the kitchen.

I cook like the wind. Chile, anything Italian, baked meatloaf, Canadian pork chops, pretty much anything baked, broiled, fried, boiled, grilled or barbecued. I don't usually make any fancy sauces from scratch but I do put together my own marinades.
And I make a killer grilled cheese, but prefer the reuben. :D

I'm glad someone mentioned canning. I feel like it's becoming a lost art or something. It seems like the only people who consistenly do it are our grandmothers. My Mom makes incredible relish every year (among other things)...

Canning and jam making is becoming trendy again in foodie circles. Heck, Tefal have a brand new jam making machine you can buy. I would love to try canning but I live in a flat and just don't have the space or the produce. My Nana always had her garden growing stuff she would can for the winter. Perhaps one day when I move to the country.

I make most everything from scratch when cooking. Make my own stocks to be reduced down for sauces. I think when it comes to cooking people try to over do it by trying to use too many ingredients which complicates the flavor of the meal. The one rule you should use when cooking is that every ingredient should enhance the main ingredient and accentuate the flavor of the main ingredient.
For example, if you are going to cook a filet mignon it should be pan seared and finished in the oven. A filet does not have enough fat in it to be grilled. Choose ingredients that will enhance the flavor of the meat (Caramelized onions, sauteed mushrooms and a nice demi-glace for the sauce). Don't rub it with over powering spices so that when you taste the meat all you taste are the spices.

I learned how to make perogies the other month. It is time consuming at first but they freeze well so are a good thing to do in batches.

Im a pretty good cook myself. I try to do everything from scratch too; sauces, marinades...etc
I make a delicious mushrooms Osso Bucco - it's my favorite dish without a doubt ! ![]() My Lamb Racks in a nut crust is also one of my specialty dishes ! ![]() Spaghetti sauce is a basic - you have to know how to make a good real italian sauce. I have one meat sauce recipe and another one with meatballs - simply delicious !! When I do spaghetti sauces like that, I do a huge batch and freeze most of it. It's easy and simple when you don't know what to eat one night. Ok..im hungry now!

I can cook lamb rack too, its already cut and seasoned at Trader Joe's, all you have to do is put it in the oven and you dont have to season or put anything in it!
I am really lazy, I can't really cook anything, but I can make an edible salad tho. Just toss in pre-washed bagged lettuce, cut up a tomato, some cucumber, onions and bell pepper and spray some low calorie dressing on it. I can also make a omelet, just fry some ham onions and tomatoes and mix with egg and sprinkle cheddar cheese on top. My idea of spaghetti is boiling noodles and then dumping sauce from a jar, I don't even bother to heat the sauce, I don't care, I just dump it in the warm noodles, mix and eat. I don't have energy to cook the ground beef or make it from scratch. I am too lazy. I can't make any sauces. When I buy steak (which is rarely because it is very very unhealthy). I only know how to put olive oil in the pan and I just fry it and make sure not to burn it. I don't know all about putting it in the oven and other stuff, no one taought me and it's too complicated. Add lots of a1 steak sauce, microwave a bag of frozen rice from Trader Joe's and I'm good to go. I dont cook a lot. I like to order out. And I avoid eating bbq even when other people cook it cause it causes cancer!! the burnt meants are carcinogenic and have been proven scientifically to cause cancer! |
