Not talking about these crazy unjustified abusive beatings, but when i was growing up , I got hit when I stepped out of line or talked back. But I mean today kids get away with shit I just can't believe. Its more common with us minorities but I really think it benefited me growing in long run having clear guidelines and punishments. Like I see these kids (usually white) acting up in stores like I would and the parents are so soft just do nothing, all my mom had to say was wait till we get home and end of discussion, on best behavior.I can see a big difference in kids that were hit and kids that were not, and it ain't for the better. Not always the case of course but what about you, am I crazy, tell me ppl are still going to beat their kids?

I don't get why its not unheard or such a bad thing for white ppl, whose kids could use it the most. I mean at one time kids were hit in schools and since that went away we all know the steady decline in classroom environment etc

"No one's going to hit MY kids".... was the prime mantra of my ex-sister-in-law back in the 70's.

She raised two perfectly ill-behaved little darlings who were allowed to run amok in restaurants yelling at the tops of their lungs to the joy of all other patrons. Both of course grew up to have all kinds of wonderful personal hangups and disorders.

I'm inclined to favor the notion that kids do need real meaninful discipline once in a while. My parents weren't afraid or too lazy to spank me, and as an adult I look back on it and appreciate that they cared enough to put me straight when I needed it.

My parents would break out my grandfathers belt that he wore in the army. Big thick leather mother fucker that would leave welts on my ass. Of course I had to do some pretty bad shit to get it but it did come out every now and then.

I have never used an object to hit my son but spankings did happen while he was younger. Overall I got lucky though, he's a mellow kid and understands that when I say something the first time, arguing about it's just gonna cause more problems. If I had me as a kid I would be in jail right now.

i got my butt busted when i needed it as a kid and i spanked my kids when they needed it too. my kids are 16 and over now and even when they were little, if they saw another kid acting up in stores they would comment that they needed they butts whipped lol

I had my butt whipped when I was a kid, that's how my parents disciplined me and I understand why did they do so. I thanked my parents so much for everything they did to me... I never grew up as a spoiled brat!

Recently I watched 2001 a space odyssey.The last time I saw it was when I was 5 in the movies with parents. Now at 44 I got bored watching it, I cant imagine kids today sitting there quietly through that movie. The next day I called my mother and said boy was I good kid.My mother said I didnt expect anything less. lol

You can discipline a child in many other ways than by using physical punishment.

Funny how twenty other people posted similar to my post but you single me out. Interesting.

In rebuttal I'll say that the evidence of your "progressive" approach is everywhere. Kids mouthing back to adults more than ever, kids unafraid to run mouth and even get violent when confronted with authority, kids stealing cars in epidemic proportions, parents giving them sucky little timeouts and sending them to their room, many of which are equiped with computer, stereo, phone, TV, etc. Real great discipline there.

Fact is I think it is you progressive types who are often too lazy and/or over-opinionated-yet-blissfully-uninformed who are taking society a full ten steps backwards. I've seen households where it's allmost impossible to tell if the kid is in charge or the adults.

You go with what works. Obviously the permissive tack does work but only on a minor percentage of kids. The rest out there could stand to use some good old fashioned discipline, period. Disagree all you want, my life experience and what I see around me every day tells me I'm right.

I got my ass beat when I was out of line and my kids got their asses beat when they were out of line. They are 13 and 15 now, straight A students and for the most part very respectful and obedient. Do they ever get out of line...sure they do their kids but my kids are good kids and know how to behave.

I didnt and never would "beat" my kids. But the first time my son mouthed off to my mother was the last time he mouthed off bc he got two fingers right on the mouth.

I don't mean beat up, just little tough love whens its called for. Nowadays kids act up and parents are just like hes got ADD or too much energy some cop out, he'll grow out of it. I think 80% ADD in kids aren't the actually condition just kids spoiled and undisciplined with wtv they want.

My parents had the perfect cure for ADD, no lifetime pil perscription, no therapy needed. A wooden spoon, or slipper or a belt that the mere mention of eventually had me acting right and I was deserving of it trust me.

Social services were at my house kicking ME out telling me I couldn't see/talk or be around my own kids .. went on for months till they got to the bottom of it all .. fuck ya .. if my kids screw up now .. I smack their asses no book but legally I can with my bare hand on the bottom and now they know it so things run a little smoother around here .. sometimes ..

I hear you, my kids are always coming home with some stupid idea in their heads. their friends say this or their friends say that. My oldest daughter, and I'll never forget this as long as I live, came home one day and decided since her friend didn't have chores that she shouldn't either and damn well let me know it. Words took place..... LOUDLY, now she is 16 at the time, keep this in mind.... she swung at my face, saying I was a horrible mom for making her work, blah blah blah....... I told her "If you swing at me again, I am going to knock you on your ass", she was bigger than me, so she did it and I hit her just as hard as she had hit me..... you know what she does?

She screams at me that she is calling the social workers, that's fucking abuse, her exact words and she went running out the front door...... I warned her if she stepped one foot off that porch, I was calling the law my damn self and we'd see what happened with THAT.

She looked at me and says TRY IT!! I picked up the phone and called them and they came and picked HER up down the road and brought her home....... sat with us for awhile talking, and apparently had been watching the rest of my kids (3), and then looked at her and the look on her face was and still is priceless....... "Look, you have it pretty good here, I see no abuse from anyone but you and if I have to come out here again about this I am taking YOU to jail, young lady". She started screaming I abused her and showed him the red mark on her face..... he asked her if she hit me first and she said yes but she was mad... so he says, "She has a right legally to defend herself and you are bigger than she is, so what did you expect her to do. You better watch it, if she wanted to press charges YOU would be going to jail right now".

That kid shut her mouth and never ever swung at me again and while there were verbal fights, she never pushed me that hard again. She also did her chores from then on out.

My daughter and I are best friends now, and I remember she came up and hugged me afterwards and apologized to me, we cried and then she gave me the funniest look and says "Wow, Mom, I didn't know you had it in you, I'm impressed".

It is in insanely extreme cases that would call for me to raise a hand to one of my kids, and I don't like to, but at the same time, I will NOT be threatened or abused, on ANY level by them because they have been taught that THEY hold all the cards, not in MY house. lol

I should add, that 16 yr old is now 23 yrs old and is about to start trying to start her own family and said to me a few weeks ago that if she can be half the mom I am then she will be fine. ;)

She finally grew UP. lol
