Funny how twenty other people posted similar to my post but you single me out. Interesting.
In rebuttal I'll say that the evidence of your "progressive" approach is everywhere. Kids mouthing back to adults more than ever, kids unafraid to run mouth and even get violent when confronted with authority, kids stealing cars in epidemic proportions, parents giving them sucky little timeouts and sending them to their room, many of which are equiped with computer, stereo, phone, TV, etc. Real great discipline there.
Fact is I think it is you progressive types who are often too lazy and/or over-opinionated-yet-blissfully-uninformed who are taking society a full ten steps backwards. I've seen households where it's allmost impossible to tell if the kid is in charge or the adults.
You go with what works. Obviously the permissive tack does work but only on a minor percentage of kids. The rest out there could stand to use some good old fashioned discipline, period. Disagree all you want, my life experience and what I see around me every day tells me I'm right.
