You can discipline a child in many other ways than by using physical punishment.

Many of our parents wanted our best and thought that physical punishment was the most effective form of punishment. I happen to disagree, I have never laid a hand on my son and never will. He is much more well-behaved than other kids his age.
Beating kids is the primitive action of people too ignorant to know better. No offense to your parents, or mine for that matter.
