A common method I use is to find/buy a hard drive of the same brand and model and then replace the control board on the faulty HD with the one from the working HD.

With some hard drives (fujitsu, WD) you might have to match the revision number also.

Word of Advice: Try to find out what the source of the short was first - power supply connector, surge, etc. You don't want to risk losing another drive.

Hope this helps...

First check to see if its your power supply before you go any further... sometimes the problem is the actual cord from the power supply to the harddrive(s)... also check your bios settings to make sure you have such picking up your harddrive(s)... Sometimes when a power supply is dying a motherboard can act up. I have seen a power supply smoke a motherboard and yea... I was kind of pissed off since it was my motherboard... ^^

Good luck,

this is what you should try... otherwise a lot of local pc shops have this ghost disk thing that can copy shit off dead drives.. atleast a buddy of mines former employer had one
