My dog just got hit by a car and died

Tico, my mini schauzer, and I were off for a walk. He bolted, I lost hold of the leash, and he ran into the street. The car didn't run him over, but it did hit him, and he went into shock and had a heart attack, seizure, something to that effect...At least he didn't suffer. Worst of all, the driver didn't even stop.

How long does it take to get over pets dying? I feel like they are the only true unconditional love.

Sorry to hear that mona. This happened just now?

It really isn't any different than losing a family member if you were really close to your dog. Sounds like you were. Most people won't be supportive of you, so do expect that. They will uncompassionately say, "it's just a dog." Your best bet is to contact Pet Loss Support at your local animal shelter. The bigger shelters usually offer this.

cool never knew.. I have a Vizsla too, but since we had a baby a few months ago I was forced to send him back with my wife's parents to Mexico City.. From Canada to Mexico.. Must be a trip for him.. He's already bitten a bunch of people, and is dominating their other dogs (rottweiler and lab).. I got him when he was 2 from a rescue place, they found him on the highway, had a broken toe.. Was always very faithful, I totally trusted him around kids, but only when he was with me.. Never even barked at other dogs either.. However, if he was off leash and had his territory marked off, he'd run and attack any other dog who came by.. :/

I miss him a lot! The first month was brutal, every time I came home I was smacked in the face with quiet :/

It literally happened a couple of hours ago, and I'm kinda in shock. After he was hit, his body went into shock or something, he was totally catatonic. I thought he would snap out of it, but his little body couldn't handle it. The weird thing about animals too is that I think my cat knew because she went right up to his face and sat there, like saying goodbye.

RIP. It sucks, I had a cat that got cancer and had to kill him.

Will you bury him in your backyard?

Unfortunately, I don't have a backyard, and I'm in Panama right now, so there aren't any dog cemeteries, so we had to take him to a vet for them to "take care of it". Very sad leaving him there...God only knows where he'll end up.

When you get a pet, you're investing in a future tragedy. It rarely seems to end well. I work at an animal shelter 5-6 days a week. I see a few pets come in every week that have hit by cars and brought in by the police or animal control. The ones that are still alive when they come in are usually euthanized immediately because they are in such terrible pain. At least Tico went quickly. Try to take comfort in that.

Sorry for your loss.

My old dog Sully died last October (of old age), he was 17.5 years old. It's been 9 months and I still think of him every day. I doubt you ever really "get over" the loss of that kind of friend.

All you can do is cherish the memories, the time you had together, and all the good times you had with your dog. You know he'd want you to be happy.

Very true...I just keep thinking of him lying in the street, so sad. He was only 3 and a half. I see what Babaganoosh is saying though. I had a dog die at 4 of cancer. You just fall in love and then something happens.

Maybe it helps to know that other people understand.

My dog, who has more than earned the right to be called my best friend, is currently on his second round of chemotherapy for lymphoma. The vet says the odds are 50/50 whether he'll make it to a second remission (the first remission only lasted 4 months unfortunately). By the end of this treatment, it will have cost me close to $15,000. Best money I ever spent. Every extra day that he's happy and healthy is a miracle (of science) and now I've had almost a whole extra year with him. Still, we're going to lose him much sooner than we should (he's only 5 years old) and I know I'm going to be a total wreck when it happens.

Sorry for your loss, Mona. It is ironic that another familiar face on this board told me that his dog passed away today, as well. I will tell you like I told him....if there is any good that come from this it is that you will always remember your long lost friend while everybody in the USA celebrates his life with fireworks and outdoor grilling. The 4th will have a special meaning for you from now on. Welcome it.

Again, Mona...sorry for your loss.

That's the saving grace...It just sucks when it happens all of a sudden and no time to prepare, like if he were sick, had cancer, etc.

Please, please don't blame yourself. These things happen.

A couple of years ago, our cat was tortured and killed by 2 fucking morons. We had that cat for roughly 13 years. It shouldn't have spent the last few mins of it's life being treated like that, it should have been spent going into a deep sleep at the vet when she was too old. Took me a while to get over it, and i still think about it today. Time does heal, but you will always feel some pain whenever you think about it.

So sorry for your loss... RIP Tico

No one is ever forced to get rid of their dog. You did have a choice. You weren't forced to. If the dog had behavioral issues, why didn't you hire a animal behaviorist or dog trainer?

I am so sorry for your loss. My Wolf/Best Friend died a few years ago and she was 17. It was one of the hardest things I have ever gone through. The first few weeks were really tough. But in time it will get easier. But please take your time and grief the loss. Don't rush it cause that will just prolong the process. I sought out a therapist who specializes in animal loss and she was very helpful and kind. I only saw her a few times and it really did help me. Also there are groups, where people who are going through just what you are. Reach out, like you are doing here, let people know you are hurt and need help with it. CHeck with your local vet. They should have some info on therapist and groups.

Tico will always be with you, in your heart, dreams, and by your side in the end. Take care.

Some good information and advice on this page.... http://www.winnipeghumanesociety.ca/...t/pet_Loss.php

Especially about the stages one typically goes through after the sudden loss of a pet.

How long does it take to get over pets dying? I feel like they are the only true unconditional love.
I have a mini pincher called Taco and I am always afraid of these sort of things.
Its horrible what happened. I wish you lots of strenght.
