Your thread title is misleading. McCain didn't say "I'm going to bring back the draft". Instead, what he said was a little bit of common sense - Obviously, if we ever have a World War III, we'll need a draft.

I'm not for McCain and I'm leading towards Obama, but don't be stupid about distorting the truth.

Oh, and we should have a draft. Every eighteen year old should do two years of military service. It will teach these kids that there is more to life than video games.

I had a friend that served 2 (if not 3) tours and he did everything he could to get back into the marines. They wouldnt take him back since he dgot a DUI here while he was back...

he got into the army aqnd just went back a couple weeks ago.

Anyway... this thread is retarded. If there was World War III I'm willing to bet every country involved and all of their friends would have some type of draft, after exhausting the actual army and then a volunteer corps. If any President or potential candidate denied the possibility of a draft during a World War III situation, they are simply pandering.

The people of America would never stand for that. And if both Democrats and Republicans supported it, we'd see a third party take power very quickly.

The problem with that plan is that the US Government would be unlikely to let this extra manpower just sit there, training for nothing. If this were in place right now, we'd probably be in Iran.

And you know how it works, the youth are placed on the front lines to get killed first. During the initial invasion of Iraq, 50% of all US deaths were teenage soldiers. They'd never get away with forcing that upon every teenager in the country. As has been stated, it would take WW3.

Actually, Congressmen who vote for a war should have their children as the first ones to be drafted into any war. I mean if it's a cause worth dying for, they should have no problem sending their own kids.

Something BOTH candidates would need to do if they go ahead with their plans. Obama says he is going to invade Pakistan. We would need a draft for that.

There should be compulsory national service for young people. You would still have to volunteer (and be found qaulified) to serve in the armed forces. America should have an army of citizen soldiers, not a professional army, and not mercenaries. I know this is an unpopular position on both sides of the aisle, but reflect for a moment: would we be in Iraq if the burden of war were shouldered equally by all our childen? And how might it increase electoral participiation. To hell with WW3, bring on the draft NOW.

I think the US should have mandatory military service of a minimum of 4 years for every able citizen, national and resident alien from the ages of 18 to 35. Citizens would be required to commence mandatory military service immediately upon graduation of high school unless they enroll and complete 4 years at a university, otherwise their service shall commence upon graduation from college in which case their military position and rank is based on their university studies, grades, etc..

Nationals, resident aliens and those seeking citizenship should be required to commence mandatory military service within 30 days of entering These United States of America and only after completion of their 4 years service shall they be entitled citizenship.

I also think military COMBAT service shall be an applicable criminal sentence for certain crimes in which the offender can redeem himself.
