I finally watched Cloverfield for the first time

Last night.

All I can say is... that vidcam they were using has one hell of a battery in it.

I enjoyed it.

I have batteries in my cams that last 400 something minutes. The movie is only what, hour and 1/2? EASY to have a battery last that long. Any battery will last at least 2 hours if it's fully charged.

yeah, no shit, 2 hours is nothing these days for a camcorder, mine lasts 8 hours with constant playing, longer if I am not recording

At first I was wondering if I got it right in ordering the movie (video on demand from my digital cable provider), because of the first 20 minutes or so being all about these kids having some sort of party. And it took some getting used to that the entire movie was done from the perspective of someone's vidcam.

Good effects though.
Quite a good amount of originality in amongst the typical monster fair.
Good flow to the plot, and overall a well-written script.
Well-acted.

I give it an 8.5 out of 10. I watched it through a second time this evening just to make sure I didn't miss anything, but I doubt I'll watch it again. Maybe in five years, we'll see.

Worth watching purely because they did do some interesting things...

If you have a short attention span or get motion sickness don't bother watching it.

I absolutely hate the shaky as hell camera, would have been better if they did more of a first person type through somebodies eyes and didn't make it SOOO shaky.

Acting doesn't get much worse than this... thought for sure I was watching a made for TV sci-fi movie with big budget special effects. It would have been an UPGRADE to bring in some known D-listers because the actors in this were like way below whatever class Kathie Griffin is putting herself in.

Like CDSmith said its not something you'll be watching more than 2 times TOPS so don't buy it.

To shaky for me.
It could have been better.
Still worth watching, it was just one of those kind of movies where it could have been done better.

I agree with everything except the acting part. I think it was actually well-acted, and the fact they used unkowns coupled with the fact that it was basically written as reality, that this tape from someone's hand-held vidcam is the only account the military has of what happened struck me as, well, interesting.

If something like that ever actually did happen (any type of bad disaster really), people actually do talk and act like that. They did a good job of it for that reason. If you think people don't say "oh my god" and yell each other's names 10 times over during such a crisis you haven't been in a crisis. People do, act, and say all sorts of stupid shit. "Did you SEE that? OMG did you SEE that??"... lol, but to actually ACT in that way purposefully... no question they did a good job.

Having known actors would have detracted from it.

I have yet to see video shot with a privately-owned vidcam that isn't shaky.

One of the main strengths of this movie is it's perspective.

The first 15 min or so were painful... Annoying camera movement... akward acting.. and boring non sense... but as soon as the first explosion was heard... The annoying shaky camera all of a sudden made the action feel more real and the movie started to be entertaining... The special effects were quite incredible for what looked like a low budget movie... The rescue mission part in the Pisa-like building was dumb... From what I got, they didnt even know if the girl was really there.. Turned out she was but just about to die... Next thing you know shes running like Carl Lewis...

I give it 7.8/10

You're expecting realism in a movie about a giant monster thrashing NYC ??

I'd give it a 4 out of 10. Very predictable, boring, cheesy, same story as tens of other movies... the candid camera shaking gave me a headache. I fell asleep half way through. Wasted 5 bucks for a rental.

This was pretty much my take on it as well.

I thought it was cool actually. The guy had to go rescue his girl no matter what. In his place I'd have shit my pants and then done the same thing.

Not true. He got (stole) that new battery for his phone, checked his messages, and heard her in the message she left him saying she was in her apartment and couldn't move and was bleeding.

He knew.

No, she wasn't about to die, she was pinned on a metal spike of some sort. Her entire building had been knocked sideways and it was leaning on the building next to it, and she had slid down and got a piece of metal through her, obviously in a place where no vital organs were.

It's possibled she could still run after that. I know I'd have to be pretty banged up to prevent me from running if something like that attacked my city. lol ...in fact fuck that, I'd be hauling ass on my mountain bike, away from it at high speed, spike impalement wound or not.

Just saw it this past week.

This was honestly one of the worst movies I've ever watched and I literally considered taking out the DVD and not finishing it.

There was not a SINGLE scene in it I found interesting or entertaining.

I'm a big Sci-Fi movie fan too, was extremely disappointed in this uninspired piece of garbage.

I didn't really like the movie, it was ok to watch, but not really great. The ending pretty much sucked ass.

Did any of you notice at the very end, you can see the creature land in the water, it's over towards the right side.

I really like that movie, i was hoping to see the monster and it was showed indeed. The only thing that did not make sense was that the monster shown in the entire movie and the monster shown almost at the end of the film, when it eats the camera dude, the size and looks are different, so that opens a new door about it and there are speculations of there being 2 monsters...hahahah I think it was very entertaining.

Within the story of the movie it was much longer than 2 hours. More like 10+ hours.

They were running it all evening, all night, and into the next morning, plus they switched it to "view" mode several times to watch video, which eats up a lot of power.

Too funny. I literally just got done watching it, came here, and saw this thread.

Overall, the movie really wasn't that good. It wasn't awful, but it was far from a masterpiece. It was majorly flawed.

The battery issue is the first thing to get on my nerves as well. That, and knowing that most tapes only last an hour or so. Yet, this all took place over the course of seven hours? No battery change or tape change once? Come on.

Secondly, nothing was really explained in the movie. They never explained where this creature came from or why it was destroying everything in sight. Yet, if you watch the special features on the DVD, they explain it all there! Um, shouldn't they have put that pivotal information in the actual fucking movie?

Seriously. Watch the special features. They explain that the creature was suppose to be some newly hatched being that came from the bottom of the ocean and was only destroying everything because it was a scared little child. Yet nowhere, and I mean nowhere, was that divulged in the actual movie. Maybe if they threw that rather important plot info into the movie, it would have been longer than 75 minutes.

The whole thing seemed like a Sci-Fi Channel original movie to me. The camera shake thing got old quick, the lack of any explainations got old quick, and the whole "my camera doesn't require new tapes or batteries" thing got old quick, too.

Watched it with a group of people who laughed all of the way through like it was a comedy film. Cheesy, poor acting and monster thing was pathetic.

I can't believe so many people really didn't like it that much.

I watched it in the cinema and was absolutely riveted. I'd known before hand that it was all shot from a person with a video camera's perspective, and that it started off with the party. I got totally caught up in the film, my adrenaline was pumping and felt like I was there.

Best thing I'd seen in ages.

I.

To each their own. The whole thing just seemed unfinished to me. At only 75 minutes long, they could have easily squeezed in a lot more. Like, how the monster thingy came to be, and how come people randomly exploded when they got bit by one of the monster thingy's little gremlins.

Explaining the creature's origins in the special features of the DVD was just lame.

Again, far from the worst movie I've ever seen. It just could have been a lot better.

I'm gonna buy it on Blu-Ray. I've heard there's some nice features on it.

Went to the movie theatre when it came out and enjoyed it, but thought they over-did the "shaky" camera thing. Ok we get that it's to be life like, but c'mon, i don't think people would have moaned if the camera only shook a little. I almost left after the first 20mins it was so bad.

The movie in general was pretty good though. The little things going on which were quite hard to notice (and i only found out about from YouTube etc) were quite cool.

7.5/10

the monster came from space..the whole reason the military wanted the footage...was for the last five seconds of the movie..where you see it splash into the ocean

That was a satellite, not the monster...

My assumption was that the satellite crashed and released the monster from beneath the water...

either way, entertaining movie, but I can see why it wasn't a movie for everyone....

Horrible fucking movie. End of story. Not really sure how anyone could enjoy it. 'cam' innovation sucked and started off pretty annoying. No real storyline/plot (no, this is not a cool/unique/interesting feature, this is stupid). Horrible acting. List could probably go on but it's annoying to even think about this movie or what was in it any longer.

Exactly. You kind of have to get your head around the fact that this is "real", and what you are watching is the US military's only record of what happened. The home movie motif is actually what makes the whole thing work, but anyone who was expecting the usual "blockbuster monster movie" with blockbuster movie cinematography is definitely going to be disappointed and come away hating it.

As previously stated I've watched it twice, but am really not motivated to see it a third time, at least anytime soon. However, it did leave me wondering if there could be any kind of sequel, maybe one that is more regular movie and not from the perspective of the home vidcam. It's just that there's a tiny infinitesimal part of me that would like to know what happened next. Or was it supposed to be assumed that the monster was killed at the end there?

I thoroughly enjoyed... best made movie I've seen in quite some time, whether or not that is saying much.

Original, different, and just corny enough to be laughable at times...

The monster wasn't from space. It was some new species thingy that hatched from an egg underseas and made its way to the surface to wreak havoc, like a confused little child. Just lashing out at everything in sight. Frantic. Panicked. Although those lovely plot elements were completely left out of the movie and shoved away in the special features on the DVD.

Stupid.

It was alright, entertaining but yeah there wasn't much of a story to it which is something I enjoy when watching a movie.
