What is a fair charge for CEO consulting for a local small business?

A local business wants to hire me for two hours of SEO consulting. I was thinking $40 a hour since it's just consulting and I don't have to make any actual changes.

So face to face consulting to a local biz from another local biz.

Most people charge way more than $40 an hour... especially if you are going to their place of business. If you're comfortable with that, then go for that, but if they can afford more... demand more.

Based on the value you assign to your own time, I am going to guess that $40/hour might be a little too much.

If a true SEO was consulting it would be a lot more than that.

Ya it's not my main forta but after seeing his website he needs allot of help. plus it's a new business for DWHS so I want to give him a good price.

He is coming to my office so I don't have to travel. But he is established lawyer. maybe I will go for $50 and normally charge $80 if we do it as a regular offering.

$40 an hour?

you don't know much about seo then i take it?

i personally wouldn't walk into someones office for an hour for any less than $2000...& that's just to talk to them in "generalizations"

Hmm, I do wonder if I charge too less then he wont take it seriously. The problem is he is a business neighbor and isn't really looking for a high end solution.

It's not really how good I am as much as what small businesses will pay and feel good about it. In his case really good considering he is neighbor business and we are a new store in this area.

Dude, I have no idea what you are smoking, but $50/hr is nothing now a days, some electrician or plumber bills more than that per hour... and you want to bill the same for seo services?! I wouldn't go less than $200/hr in a situation like that, and that's even considered cheap for someone who has a clue about seo...

$40 an hour isn't even enough to explain to him what seo is.

My IT Consulting starts at $175 an hour with a 4 hour minimum for clients.

$40 an hour is gas money these days.

40$/hr seems like a fair rate to me if all they're looking for is some basic consulting. Anyone can learn SEO easily on the web. Tons of free available info out there.

Now if you are hired to push their site on google, that's another story.

If he is lawyer and my neighbor, i'll brief him about SEO in general and give tips for free. I'll also mention at some point that my usual rates are $xxx per hour, but since you are neighbor, I do not feel like charging for for just an hour.

Two benefits, A lawyer will start respecting you even more and could be of help in future, plus .. he will think you are top notch since you charge $500 per hr.

IMO, spending 1 hour for someone in order to help them, enhance relationship and make contacts is a good deal. People do this all the time on boards, IMs etc. pr0 tips newbies for free all the time.

You're going to feel pain on this deal. You're being too cushy and accomidating for someone who shouldn't be worth this much. You aren't a fucking Best Buy geek squad tech by day, don't act like one.

Have a meeting, create an outline, then give it to a webmonkey and/or coder to implement.

Someone wants something very simple as a one-off - I might spec it for $20 for a half an hour job, just so I get more word of mouth. It's worked pretty well, and I feel good for helping out people who just need a little assistance.

Someone who has money? Time to sit down and discuss what their needs are, and design it before implementing - you owe this to them, and to yourself, if you plan on the deal not going sour or having to be discarded, and reimplemented.

That's worth at least three hours right there (if you're competent and knowledgeable about all of the technologies you plan to utilize for the project)..

Exactly my thoughts. It's not like this lawyer is going to understand anything beyond domain keywords, title tag, use of keywords and maybe backlinks. Any webmaster can easily explain this, and most would do it for free if this lawyer poppped into any forum and asked.

I charge min 400 a day (6 hours or so of real consultation) for my consulting work, if you charge less, they don't take you as seriously anyways...

That's the best solution I've heard so far in this thread if you don't want to charge him an arm

I was going to help the basics for free, he was the one that mentioned he wanted full site evaluation and will pay for it.

Hmm, just trying to figure what to charge. I will say I usually $130 a hour but I will do it for $50 since he is our neighbor and it's a new business in the area. See how it goes. I would think this will take less then 30 minutes anyways and hopefully he will be excited enough to spread around how much it helped.

I definably think consulting and making actual changing it allot different. I wouldn't work on the site and action plan for less then $850 a year. Which boils down to about 200 a hour plus free links from some of our sites.

I will have to work on getting that up as we get more established as a local marketing service.

The funny part is I could get him more results that would pay for itself if he paid more. I just don't think he would understand the process enough to pay the right price.

The other issue is our highest ranked sites for keywords our adult related so I can show him how well we have done.

Most main stream sites get a couple thousand relevant hits a day from google where our adult sites get thousands a day.

Not saying it's the best our amazing just saying I dont have anything to show our better results.
