What would happen if the USA just said fuck it, we're not gonna pay these debts. Consider us bankrupt.

Is this an option? I mean China could turn around and have a trade boycott with the USA, but that hurts China even more than it hurts America I think.

I'm not suggesting this could or should happen, just thinking what if

Also I wonder what the national debts are of other countries.. I'm sure there's lots of countries that owe the USA money too. Can't they just cancel some of this out, or is it strategy to have so much debt in a way?

Other countries would get pissed at us and threaten war, then in a secret meeting we would just say we will look the other way and act busy and they can take Canada.

Other countries have done so in the past: Maexico, Russia, Argentina, etc. all have defaulted on their debts at some point.

Result is that they now have to pay much higher interest whenever they need money. Their ratings are lower and that means less money in the economy.

I didnt say we would try again, though our army in 1812 did suck but come on... I said China could take it. Also by the way we were not just fighting Canada at the time. It was the United States Vs. the UK and it was actually about a UK blockade trying to prevent the US from trading with France. The UK did have the worlds best naval fleet at the time and well we had about 12,000 people. I know Canadians seem to love this and embrace it but they really should look at the entire history.

Canada isn't a very good place for any country to try and "take"...

First of all, we have a highly educated populace who would fight to the death against an oppressive regime. If we couldn't fight, we wouldn't work.

Our country is huge, and there's no way to hold it. Imagine how many troops you'd need to cover it. It's just too big.

Finally what's the point? If China tried to uh, invade Canada.. You think the US would just sit idly? Whether they want to or not, they'd be up here fighting with us.

PS: If someone actually invaded the USA, you'd have tons of Canadians enlisting to come fight with you too, myself included.

Also looking at entire battle neither side lost ground, British troops burnt down the US treasury building and effectively the White house (presidential mansion). The US burnt down York (Toronto). No shit! I tried arguing that with my dad when we were having some political debate about the Iraq war. If someone invaded my country I would fight back any way I could. His response "That will never happen." Which was not my point at all.

a real quick argument is the reality of British interest in it's colonies. That war started because of impressment into the navy, and blockades. How many actual armies do you think they had rolling around Canada when they were at war with the French? We're talking minimal garrisons.

I bet you don't even know the voting record for that war. How everyone in the southern states voted for the war, and everyone in the north voted against?

I doubt you even know the story behind why an American fort surrendered because of 'one shot fired'.. you think they would put that in history? unless of course, it was something even more embarrassing.

Well, the USA hasn't been making payments on the principal for years, and can't even afford the interest as far as I understand it at this point.. So something's gotta give I guess.. Maybe it's just not that out of whack

Besides what happen in the past if there is war in America (on our soil), we can honestly say the world will end. I can't even imagine people from other countries allowed to camp here and fight us like we are doing over seas. We are way to powerful. Plus every country may hate us. But they love our help. You have a real understanding problem then.

The USA has never missed an interest payment on it's debt, ever.

Our national debt as a percentage of GDP is right in line with most of the other industrialized nations. We're not the highest, not the lowest.
