Cigarette Free At Last!!

17 Years ago I thought I was cool and started smoking. 17 years later found myself getting winded easily, and smelling stinky all the time.

I'm officially off of the Cigarette! 2 weeks so far not a drag. I spent a couple hundred dollars on the Patch (cycles 1,2, and 3) I only used the 1st cycle for one week, then woke up one day and said fuck it to the patch as well.

This has been the second best thing I?ve ever done! Learning to masturbate at age 12 was the first

Smoking *IS* cool and enjoyable it's too bad that nobody wants to produce a popular cigarette that isn't purposely laced with soo much poison.

Edit: Actually... nobody would want to smoke it.. it'd be like diet coke..

nm..

Congrats!

The patch didn't work for me. I still smoked. I'm now on Zyban. It's my first day, I haven't had one. The urge comes and goes.

Good luck with that. You'll be smoking again in no time. If not good for you.

Using the patch in this way is like taking antibiotics until you feel better and saving the rest for later. Your body is still addicted to nicotine. the patch is designed to help you with the cravings and lower the dosage over the course of 10 weeks. in fact if memory serves, step 1 is a shit load of nicotine (about 20-30 smokes a day). So you probably didn't do much doing it for a week.

I am using the patch now, and it has been the best aid I have tried to date and this has been my most successful quit to date in terms of side effects on mood and appetite.

I think you will find that the first two weeks cold turkey (which is what you have done) is not that hard. After three weeks the cravings will come back and you are going to have a tough time.

As I said, if not...good for you. But the majority of people are going to find this.

The above is based on my own experience as well as knowing 4 people who tried exactly what you have done. One on more than one occasion. All of which were smoking again full time as before within the month.

As a foot note. Don't say you quit until you really have. One week is nothing. Hell, I'm just over a month and a bit and I still wouldn't go around advertising that I quit. Nicotine is a hard bitch to quit. And I am pretty sure that it will always be in the back of your mind and something that you will always have to avoid and think about. You need to think about your reasons for quitting and justify not having that one drag or smoke probably for the rest of your life, so I hope you know the reasons beyond the smell and being out of breath.

Brad.... the patch is good but it took me a couple of tries over the course of about a year.

Bottom line is no matter what aid you use, the biggest thing is the willpower to stop.

No doubt. But if you just stop using whatever aid you use because you assume you don't need it your going to be fucked.

For me the combo of the patch, will power and goals (measurable ones like cardio when working out) are what is working for me.

they're called quality cigars....
not being a dick, but they are - sure, they are still addictive, but a helluva lot less and 100% tobacco, no shit added. Leaves the pleasure of smoking to be just that.

After 11 years of smoking I quit cold turkey three months ago. I smoked almost two packs in the last two years, so I could feel the poison kicking in and got fed up. I did a lot of research before actually biting the bullet and out of that I have two friendly advices to anyone who is in the process of quitting.

The first and most important advice is not to quit unless you made a serious decision about never smoking again. If you do light up, doesn't matter if it's in 3 months or 5 years, it's almost guaranteed that you'll be smoking regularly again sooner or later. If you'll ever allow this to happen, then why go through that first few weeks of hell?

The second advice kind of reinforces the first. It's a fact that the more you repeat the cycle of quitting and starting to smoke again, the less chance you'll have of ever quitting for good. In my opinion the bottom line is, you either do it for real or it's not even worth to bother with.

It's no longer cool to smoke. I remember when I went to high school we had a smoking lounge for the students. Imagine that.

I quit last November myself. I smoke at conventions and at the rare party, but otherwise I don't smoke these days. I can't remember the last time I had one.

So here's what I've discovered.
- Everything tastes better.
- Everything smells better. This is not always good.
- I now run two miles every morning.
- I can smell someone having a smoke three miles away.
- It's rather odd not having a pack of cigarettes on me or worrying where my lighter is.

I went to the movies this weekend to see Indiana Jones and had to wait in a long line for an hour outside. I was fine with it and not smoking, but tought it was odd that no one at all was smoking. It's no longer "cool" to be a smoker.

yea! congrats. I quit back in August. I did the patches, too but got tired of them and just quit cold turkey. I think when you're ready, you're just ready. You start feeling better everyday and the smell of smoke starts making you seriously nauseous. I'm so happy for you!

Congrats.

Today is my 12th day smoke free. This is my 4th quit this year

2 of them lasted about 2 weeks and another lasted 2 1/2 months.

I'm using chantix. It sucks in one way because I'm using a drug instead of doing it cold turkey, but on the other hand there is no nicotine in my system.

Here's my take.
Getting through the first few days or weeks is going to be easier than you think, because you're expecting it to be hell and when you find out it's not you feel better.

Getting from there to being a permanent quitter is hard because once you pass a certain threshold like a month or 3 months or whatever, you think you have it licked and don't worry about it anymore, and then a craving will come out of nowhere and hit you like a sledgehammer.

You have to kind of treat it like an alcoholic or junky would. You can quit for 20 years but one puff and you'll be right back to a pack a day or two packs or whatever your amount is.

I heard John McCain on the radio a few weeks ago talking about health care, and he quit smoking in 1980 and says he still wishes he could have a cigarette.

Anyways, here are some resources I've found around the web that have been useful to me

http://www.whyquit.com/
full of great info

https://youtube.com/watch?v=dn50mTEGnrU
this video helps when I'm having a craving.

http://www.cancer.org/docroot/SPC/co...okers_Quit.asp
This is a timeline of how your body repairs itself when you quit smoking. It'll give you something to look forward to health-wise as your quit progresses.

I've also found it helpful to read blogs of people who have or are quitting smoking. All of the ones I read are people taking chantix though, so that may not apply to you.
