Just found out that am *not* diabetic

Perhaps a bit of inspiration for others here struggling with weight and insulin issues.

Every single person in my family on both sides has one insulin issue or another and for the vast majority of them that means type 2 diabetes. So, I am pretty genetically marked and then on top of that I am overweight. I have polycystic ovaries which often comes with insulin resistance attached to it...which given my families history with insulin I wasn't too shocked about. I got that official diagnosis of being insulin resistant just about three years ago now and they did all the blood work at the time and told me I was pre-diabetic and if I didn't change something and 'fight back' it would just be a matter of time.

So, two years ago I finally got my act together and decided that if I was going to become diabetic I was going to go down screaming and make sure there was nearly nothing more I could have done. I totally changed my eating style so that I largely eat slow burning (ie low GI) foods and really watch my calorie and fat intake. Essentially I am living a lifestyle where I try to control the insulin I am resistant to rather than let it run rampant.

I have now lost just over 80lbs and I decided last week to bite the bullet and go in to get tested for diabetes again. I just came back from getting my test results where I was told that my levels were totally normal, I am not diabetic and they wouldn't class me as pre-diabetic any more.

I understand that just from genetics I may just be putting off something that will happen later in life but it sure feels good to see that the work I have put in has had a real effect on my body. I still have a lot of weight to drop and I hope that when sometime in the next year or so I get to my target I will have beaten my insulin into submission even more.

I have always been the freak in the family and right now it feels good to be the freak that doesn't have diabetes.

Awesome news. For those who know me, they know I'm fat and I'm proud. I will however admit that at my last physical I was scared shitless that I would be diabetic and told I had to give up Pepsi.

To my surprise I was no were near diabetic or pre-diabetic (as most of my family is too), but not only that my cholesterol was on the low side of normal and my blood pressure was within normal range.

Thank you Taco Bell.....

but seriously, I was shocked by these results and even with them I know I need to change my lifestyle

Edit to add.. my last physical was in Jan of this yr

yeah, the pic is about 15 pounds ago and I won't give numbers but it was a lot and mostly because I hadn't learned the connection between my insulin levels and my weight and ovary issues.

Year and years and years of being on the board means I know the kind of responses I will get mixed in when I talk about my weight and such. Same people would give you a hard time for not losing weight so you just roll with it.

But the bad part is I think he was seriously trying to be motivational and positive. I mean if he just said that than sure, he's just taking shots at you. But when he says 'omg, good job' after it, well you have to wonder. Anyway, congrats.

I am truly happy for you Sarah. You put your mind to do it, and you did. Congrats on the weight loss. I have no doubt you will make it to your goal, as what you describe above is a lifestyle change and not just a fad diet. I am both inspired and impressed.

Congrats Sarah and I hope that you'll manage to avoid it forever! My dad has diabetes and now he is at the point where he is in and out of hospitals with very serious issues. I don't have it yet, but I'm likely to get it eventually, especially because I love eating sweets so much.

That's good news Sarah. If you lift weights and eat a real healthy diet like lean meats, fruits and vegetables that will help you continue losing weight, and keep your insulin in check. Most females I know that are dieting don't exercise anywhere near vigorously enough and don't eat enough protein and that sabotages their efforts.

I exercise for at least 40 minutes most day of the week and I don't count things like walking the dog and stuff like that in the total. I eat very limited amounts of meat most weeks and largely eat a 'wholefoods' type diet. Simply because the lower gi stuff is better for insulin levels and it helps me get more for my calorie buck, so to speak.

Thats great, Sarah Well done and keep going.

I am always amazed and inspired watching the tv shows like biggest loser and such. When they lose so much weight they find all kinds of problems disappearing, like you did, and like asthma issues and other related-to-weight* things.

Really shows you how much medical field really treats symptoms rather than causes or prevention. Taking it into your own hands rocks, what a great feeling of accomplishment!

I don't think you can just blame that on the medical field and doctors, it is also the fault of the patients. I know many diabetics. None of them eat right. Even though they know how and know what can happen, they still don't eat right. That isn't the fault of the doctors.

I didnt mean to "blame" medical field at all. I'm not like Bill Maher on the issue. But the caseload itself requires them to treat symptoms first and maybe address diet and nutrition if you're lucky.

When I checked out of the hospital with heart disease and such, they gave me one sheet of notebook paper full of spelling errors and shit that said "eat smaller portions and less salt". lol And by the way, take these $400 worth of drugs each month.

I would have been very happy to have received the names/numbers of some nutritionists and or personal trainers or something when I checked out as well, thats all.

Also, if you find out there is something genetic or just a condition at all then it can be used as a place where you try to work with it. Before I knew I had insulin resistance I was on every diet you can imagine but once I knew that was what was making my weight loss more difficult than it is for some other people I could then learn how to 'tame' it. Before hand it was just guessing.

I met with a massage therapist recently that specialized in my condition and he taught us things that we never really thought were possible. Understanding the condition and how it works is a big part of finding a solution... seems like an obvious thing, but really it isn't treated as such.

Watching my family struggle with it was my motivation for sure.
I need a kidney transplant within 4-5 months and that's caused by diabetes, so there are LOTS of things you should be happy about now that you know you don't have it

Well done hunny.

And about this part :

Diet and lifestyle is 90% of type 2 diabethes. As long as you eat right and exercise you will not get it. And if you manage to spend a couple decades lean and fit, you will most likely be set for life, and never get it.

Keep with it.

There are different reasons to why people eat like they do and by that gain weight. Some can talk about it and some use it to cover up something else. Some use food as their best friend and some just because they like it. Many reasons.

I love food....& i sit in front of a computer all day...thus little to no exercise.

In fact the most exercise i get a day is parking far away from stores I'm going to....

A little bit on the tread mill i have downstairs.

And lots of sex with sluts....

I've always been a fat kid...i make no excuses.

I fucking hate excuses from people. No matter what they are. If you're fat...its because you take in more food than you burn off....period. It's got nothing to do with anything else....that shit just cracks me up.

Anyways I'm proud of sarah, 80lbs is a huge achievement you go girl!
