For those confused by the surf report, lemme just quickly explain what those surf heights actually mean:
In Hawaii you take the actual height of the face of the wave, divide it in two and subtract another one for every five feet. Therefore, when looking at the wave that is seven times the height of a six foot person you would start with forty-two feet. Divide it in two, making it twenty-one feet. Then subtract one for every five, making it a seventeen foot wave in the eyes of the locals. In California we simply divide the height in two. It never gets big enough to use the one for five factor. On the east coast they do just the opposite. They so rarely get sizable waves that they double it. So then, a ten foot tall wave in Hawaii is called three feet, in California it is called five feet, and in New Jersey it is called twenty feet. (I know, it's insane) So, when you see the surf report for Hawaii, and it says, 1-3 feet, it really means 6 - 12 foot faces. 4 or 5 feet means 12-15 foot faces. You get the idea. And that is some big ass surf. ![]()

I never knew that Amp, thnx for the info
![]() I have never been to Hawaii. I wld love to experience the sheer raw power of one of Mother Natures biggest waves! We currently live in Surfers Paradise. www.surfersisparadise.com Our home state (Tasmania) is said to have the biggest waves in the World. A pro surf mag sent a few pro surfers from Hawaii and the U.S. there to surf for a feature story. The location is supposed to be secret to protect anyone not kick-ass. Have you heard about it? |

http://www.wannasurf.com/spot/Austra...trial_harbour/ I read in Christian Slaters Book that even though most ppl associate Waimea as the home of the big wave - It's actually Trial Harbour that has the biggest waves in the world. Not surprising since it is near Bass Strait - one f the roughest stretches of water on earth You can only surf Trial Harbour during the summer during the other seasons the waves are so big they would just kill you Here's Why: ![]() ![]() ![]() Here is the offical surf website from our home state , heralded as "the last frontier of surfing" http://www.tassiesurf.com/ Only problem with surfing in Tassie - is that it's so cloe to antarctica - you freeze your balls off (fortunately I don't have that problem - though back when I used to surf everyday including winter, I DID get hypothermia on a coupleof occasions) For most ppl - they'd need a wetsuit even in summer. |
