They are really cute but they are not easy to keep track of. A friend of mine had his lost around the house for weeks. I don't think it is legal to sell them in the US.

Yep, and they need a special diet to survive, so nothing for people afraid of insects and especially mealworms.

They need a huge cage, I'd say about 20 times the size of an average bird cage.

They are sensible, they get ill fast (good luck finding a doctor), they have strange habits, they like to bite and destroy (especially if you don't give them enough attention when they want it), an ex-girlfriend of mine had one...just listen :

So, if your girlfriend has loads of spare time, loves being up at night, has money to waste and looks for something that's a good training in case you are going to have a baby later, it's the perfect pet.

I still hear them bark in my nightmares, believe me, these cute little bastards were made in hell. Once you have one, it would break your girlfriends heart to give away this little tojan horse!

They are legal in most states. CA is one I know where they are NOT legal and I have heard that they do go after anyone they suspect of keeping/breeding them.

They NEED to be in at least pairs, either a neutered male and female, two females or brothers raised together.

It will be our last batch of babies because they are becoming harder and harder to place as more and more people dump unwanted ones on to the market. Because they can take many months to bond with and sometimes aren't too pleasant if they haven't been handled enough, many people give up on them within the first few months and sell them. If she really wants one, I would suggest adoption. Anyway, feel free to hit me up for info or help persuading your girlfriend not to get one.

The sugar gliders being sold in the pet trade in the US were bred in the US and are 100% legal to own in states which do not specifically ban them such as CA.
