My girlfriend wants a SUGAR GLIDER? (pet)

Has anyone ever owned one of these exotic pets? I can't find any local shops with them and they are pricey.

Here is a youtube link

almost got one a few years ago.. then lost interest

thenaughtygirl 04-07-2008 04:21 PM

They are really cute but they are not easy to keep track of. A friend of mine had his lost around the house for weeks. I don't think it is legal to sell them in the US.

OTerror 04-07-2008 04:22 PM

damn.. sounds like a headache!

After Shock Media 04-07-2008 04:28 PM

My cat and little dog would destroy the house breaking everything until they got to fight it out over who gets to actually eat it.

Way to expensive.

BradM 04-07-2008 04:28 PM

I researched them. They are cool but a total nightmare. You need SOOOO much time for them.

brand0n 04-07-2008 04:31 PM

dont do it

my buddy got a pair of them.. thought it was the best thing going

they lasted 3 days before he was bonkers

Yep, and they need a special diet to survive, so nothing for people afraid of insects and especially mealworms.

They need a huge cage, I'd say about 20 times the size of an average bird cage.

They are sensible, they get ill fast (good luck finding a doctor), they have strange habits, they like to bite and destroy (especially if you don't give them enough attention when they want it), an ex-girlfriend of mine had one...just listen :
https://youtube.com/watch?v=kW7GAigWZ-o (some info as well)
https://youtube.com/watch?v=DvchGSugt44 (that one's a good barker, hehe)

So, if your girlfriend has loads of spare time, loves being up at night, has money to waste and looks for something that's a good training in case you are going to have a baby later, it's the perfect pet.

I still hear them bark in my nightmares, believe me, these cute little bastards were made in hell. Once you have one, it would break your girlfriends heart to give away this little tojan horse!

They are legal in most states. CA is one I know where they are NOT legal and I have heard that they do go after anyone they suspect of keeping/breeding them.

They're interesting animals but require specialized diets including live food, a specially blended base food which can sometimes not be purchased locally, and fresh fruits daily. Shady dealers/breeders will tell you all kinds of things like that you can feed them baby food or cat food or that you can keep them in gerbil cages. They also live for 15-20 years, not a couple of years like a gerbil or something.

Another big issue is that they live in family groups in the wild and can become so distressed that they won't eat or can even self mutilate if you leave them alone while at work, school, vacation. For this reason I don't recommend that ANY sugar glider be kept as a solitary pet under any circumstances. They NEED to be in at least pairs, either a neutered male and female, two females or brothers raised together.

Do a lot of research because they are NOT your average house pet! I've been keeping/breeding them for over two years now and just recently sold my latest set of twins. It will be our last batch of babies because they are becoming harder and harder to place as more and more people dump unwanted ones on to the market. Because they can take many months to bond with and sometimes aren't too pleasant if they haven't been handled enough, many people give up on them within the first few months and sell them. If she really wants one, I would suggest adoption. Anyway, feel free to hit me up for info or help persuading your girlfriend not to get one. :winkwink:

What I read very very high maintance.

Angry Jew Cat - Banned for Life 04-07-2008 05:19 PM

you do NOT want sugar gliders. they are incredibly high maintenance, and a total nightmare, even though they are very cute. there's a reason you see so many sugar gliders up for sale in the classifieds...

miss_jody 04-07-2008 05:23 PM

creepy little suckers

Illegal.

Get caught exporting from AU and face 25 years in jail.

Many *endangered* Aussie animals die in asian suitcases year in year out.

Don't support this black-market.

The sugar gliders being sold in the pet trade in the US were bred in the US and are 100% legal to own in states which do not specifically ban them such as CA.

Sergio1234 04-07-2008 06:29 PM

Legal in NV if i'm not mistaken

judycash 04-08-2008 12:00 AM

go get a whippet it will cuddle with her seriously mine is happier when he is being held

Holly 04-08-2008 06:10 AM

99% of people who get pets like this, do it for the attention.

They should all be shot.

The Duck 04-08-2008 07:26 AM

These are wild animals and not domesticated.
