Hey Dave, Im from Montreal, bought a condo in Laval about 2 years ago and love it. It was the best place for me to get to work from. Im about 1 minute from differnet highways.
I also wanted a parking space, which is harder to find on the montreal island, plus, the prices are like 3 times higher in the city for just about the same thing. My condo is 2 stories plus a basement and a garage. I would never find something like that in Montreal. I'm at about 7 minutes from montreal anyway. Laval has become quite big too with it's own little ''downtown'' and 3 brand new subway stations so if you don't have a car, you can go with the public transportations without any problem. You can really find everything that you need. Traffic is a bit heavy to and from the island but I guess you get use to it. And well, downtown Montreal can be REALLY messy too. What's cool of living direclty in Montreal is that you can basically walk everywhere and the night life is awesome. But, it you have a car, especially in winter...it's a nigthmare. ![]() Anyway, hit me up if you need more infos.... ![]()

Laval is very nice area ( it is in fat the 2nd largest city after Montreal ) and is 30 minutes away from downtown Montreal ( tough Laval has quite a lot of hot spots ).
Real estate in Québec is not in a crisis, so there are no bargains to be had . Laval will be cheaper and nicer . We are 70 minutes away from Platsburgh, NY and Burlington, Vermont.

I am myself a francophone, and maybe a separatist, but in no way would I block myself from interacting with other people over language .... We are way more open then americans are towards the so called " illegal immegration " spanish language people... We do not have a Lou Dobss on TV everynight bashing mexicans while they cut his lawn ....

And I'm sure most of the first generation Greeks started out living in Montreal. I'm not spreading false impressions, It's just that Montreal is better suited for non-French speaking new comers than any other cities in Quebec....

I would agree that if you don't speak french, I would stick to Montreal itself and not Laval. Not that you wouldn't get by, but more people will be english on the island. That and Laval is a suburb like you would find in any other city. Sure it happens to be very close to downtown and all the advantages listed above, but if you're gonna go to the trouble of moving here, might as well go all the way
![]() The west island area will be 90% english, but its basically just an english version of Laval. Downtown is closer to 50/50. Without knowing you at all or what you're looking for, in general I would suggest downtown or old port. And if the whole nightlife scene is what you're after, none of the other areas compare, at all. |

Summer is the best time to be in Montreal so you may want to live here only part of the year. Not in the winter.
