John McCain no idea how to fix the economy

He gave a speech where he said some random mumbo jumbo about having a big economy and thats pretty much the same as a good economy..... then he went on to say we buy a lot of oil from people that do not like us.

If you were to make a big ass list of "things" about the candidates I would like more of these things about McCain than the other two, but is anything more important than the economy right now? He really doesn't have a clue.

I can't believe the republicans nominated him as their successor to bush.. The guy looks at least 3x as scary, he's old, looks like he smells (on purpose?) and not only did they choose him... it was a landslide.

And... he might win.

come on, you think any president has a clue? They are just the figurehead. Do you seriously think those who hold the power in this country are gonna leave it up to some new douche bag every 4 years?? Think of the US as a business and it will become clear to you.

He's almost 80 years old. That's not the age, nor the time at which one should lead a country.

He is a representative of the State of Arizona and this state has misplaced 2 billion Dollars. Now they are scrambling to find ways to have us pay for their thieving asses. I doubt this guy has any clue about running a country.

He has sold Arizona down the river way too many times, he flip flops and I believe he has no hard stance on any issue except he was some war hero.

Calling a POW a failure is out of line.

I'm not voting for him either, but I respect his service.

He volunteered for combat duty, unlike those who used family connections to avoid active duty, and suffered as a POW for years when he could have been released (due to his father's position) while others were imprisoned.

Sadly only one person knew how to fix things and he was laughed off the stage. Now we have the dems who think spending 280 billion more a year and a republican who thinks more war will fix it.

The President doesn't really do anything besides give speeches and tell bad jokes. He doesn't control the economy and cannot really fix anything. He does what his party wants him to do, he makes people money, he sets himself up for when he is out of office.

McCain wasn't a bad looking guy when he was younger. The President is more of a national mascot or hero than someone who does a job to actually benefit the people.

Do you know how much $$$ has been made from things like President Bush farting dolls??? Millions. The President cannot fix anything.

You can't "fix" a market economy. It was up, now it's down, and it will be up again later. Same for centuries

You don't know more about economic cycles, markets, booms and bursts, than McCain.

The post of President in a democracy is a post of representative, similar to PR, with pre-written speeches. McCain is not applying for a job of economist, investment banker or CEO.

I love the contempt some adult webmasters have for people like them.

Self-hatred, i said it, i will repeat it.

I don't think the government can really fix the economy, especially an economy that's in the pits due to individuals who made poor choices in investing in homes they couldn't afford, and lenders who deliberately provided people with loans they knew couldn't afford them. This isn't the first time the housing market has doomed itself. It will 'fix' itself over time. Government policies to bail out those unfortunate enough to be on the losing end will not help. It's like getting a financial credit for doing something wrong, and doesn't do anything to resolve the problem. So, on that note, the Democrats appear to have it all wrong.

Cheap houses will eventually be bought up by investors and either rented out or leased and everything will pick up again after this enormous setback. Like the poster above said, it's a cyclical process.

As far as McCain and his war, people often underestimate the other associated costs of war. We're spending trillions on it (sure, a small portion of overall GDP, but it's a lot of money that could be put to better use), dead soldiers, zero progress in the middle east, breeding more terrorists there, instability in that region, skyrocketing oil prices which effects citizens, the decreasing value of the dollar partly because of the domestic economy but also largely part of America's standing worldwide and which effects costs of goods, imports etc.

News flash...Presidents do not have control of the economy...and zero power to fix the economy. For the most part the cyclic ups and down of the economy is caused by private enterprise and sometimes by laws passed by congress. Presidents have realative little power domestically other than the bully pulpit and do not controll the purse strings. A Presidents real power lies in foreign policy decisions.

Not true. A President can help pass regulations that cover any number of industries. He can sign legislation that changes taxes, tariffs, and government spending. He also has the power to remove and add in members of the Federal Reserve.

While many of his decisions can be overrided by a Congress, a President still has power to dramatically affect an economy. The fact the President let the oil companies write the energy policies, Pharm companies write Medicare policies, and the banks write the financial policies had a dramatic impact on our country's economics.

Signing legislation is not the same as writing it.

"help pass"...notice where I said "bully pulpit". The Congress controls the purse strings...not the President. The President can use his position of the "bully pulpit" to appeal to Congress and/or the American people but is severely limited when it comes to domestic power. End of fucking story.

I still feel he has a lot of power. Take Bush for example. He had a Republican Congress that would rubber stamp anything he wanted. He had a lot of power to change budgets and tax codes. He was able to select the Fed Chairman. He is ultimately responsible for signing off on bad energy, financial, and medicare policies that have hurt our economy. He is responsible for putting people in the DOJ in power. A DOJ that sat back and allowed crooks to pillage through people's 401ks and pensions.

Sure he can't point his finger and say "change this now" (although he has the power to sign executive orders), but he does have a lot of influence politically and legislatively in determining what gets done.
