I'm Southern, so it's all about the grits.

And I don't like oatmeal.

What kind of oats?
Yes it matters as I do not like crushed quick cooking oats in my oatmeal. (which is the common type sold or bought)

Slow cooking oats that are my choice for a breakfast item between two. Grits would win when it comes to a savory or side dish.

Two totally different things! Grits are savory (unless you're from the north and put sugar on them) and oatmeal is sweet - with all the brown sugar I put on it

ASM - have you had the steel cut oatmeal? It's my favorite. I've cooked them overnight in a crockpot if I have guests but apparently Trader Joes sells them frozen and ready to thaw and eat. IMO, better than even the slow cooking rolled oats.

I've been having oatmeal almost every day for a few weeks now. So yummy and quick! Top hearty rolled oats off with some frozen (then thawed, obviously) fruit and maple syrup and a sprinkling of wheat germ and some milk and mmmm I'm full until lunch time!

Only type I eat as oatmeal, though we/I call them pinhead oats here. I always crockpot them as well overnight. Will try the Trader Joes frozen ones but well I am skeptical. I am very much into home made and knowing whats in my food (ok its more than that). I really like the texture, the add ons I can insert, and of course the cooking liquids I can use with making them via a slow cooker. Not to mention they are a great reason to use up some of my dried and canned fruits.

Oatmeal is the bomb! I haven't tried steel cut oats though, I wonder how that compares to regular Oatmeal. What's the difference?

The cooking time
No seriously...

They are a whole oat cut into like 4-5 pieces and they still contain the whole grain as well as the bran. This gives them a more nutty taste, more texture, and of course more healthier for you.

Instant oats and rolled oats have been pressed (rolled) and also steamed some to pre cook them. Rolled are cooked less than instant oats. Naturally the more you process them the less nutrition they carry and taste I feel (taste part is opinion, nutrition part is fact). Personally the only things I would use these for are cookies, filler, and granola.

I can't choose between the two. One is breakfast in a bowl, the other is a side dish.

But I'll eat any kind of hot cereal. I can't seem to find Wheatina in TEXAS.

PS The oatmeal in Phoenix is steel cut .. yummy.
