I like st. patricks day as the next guy but give me a fucking break with "us irish people deserve a holiday"

A bunch of races make up America but I think it is stupid how people can vote for a foreign tradition to be an offical holiday when great people like g Washington and Lincoln have been put into one holiday.

I don't think that is what St Patricks Day is all about, but interpret it how you may. We are far from a sensitive group of people who needs a day to feel special about themselves. Trust me...we are not crying about equality issues. St Patricks Day is celebrated by all, and it's a day to kick back and have a great time.

It's no sillier to celebrate a foreign tradition as it is to celebrate a religious one (yes it is about a Patron Saint, but is celebrated by both Christians and Non-Christians). If you think about it, St. Patricks Day is one of the few celebrating a positive as opposed to a negative: A person's death, the death of soldiers, a resurrection, a day of thanks based on invasion, etc.

For arguments sake, the reason why this Holiday made it here to the US: Number of U.S. residents who claim Irish ancestry: 34.5 million. This number is almost nine times the population of Ireland itself (4.1 million). Irish is the nation’s second most frequently reported ancestry, trailing only those of German ancestry.

Lee... If you worry about getting to the bank or having a check clear the day after St Patricks Day, then you should step back for a moment and enjoy life on a day where most others are as well. A simple solution is to keep enough money in that account to have a check come in a day late. That solves the problem. 1 day rollover shouldn't be drastic, but if it is I can see your point.

In all fairness, if I moved to Ireland, it would be a 5 day festival and my liver would fail. I would also lose a hell of a lot of money with the exchange rate between the Euro and the Dollar. If this weren't the case however, I'd live in Ireland without a second's hesitation. It is beautiful, the people are friendly and it's everything Vegas is not.

Cheers all..I didn't mean for something fun to piss so many people off.

Just to clarify the religious/non-religious holiday: It is a religious celebration in Ireland, but it's interpretation and celebration here in the US is far from that. No, I'm not ignorant. :P

Sherm, having a cheque delayed isnt really an issue too be honest. I was more venting at the fact that the US seems to have more national holidays than most and it seems they are used as an excuse by a heck of a lot of sponsors to be a bit crafty at times. The move to Ireland jibe was just a bit of tongue in cheek, personally I dont care either way whether its a holiday or not really.

However knowing the Irish' track record, I would suggest the day after St.Patricks day would be best served as a national holiday so they can sleep off the previous nights excess.

Great People like George Washington indeed. Our(USA) country has never had such a leader since. The man lead his troops literally, and burnt the boats and said "Either we Win or Die" oh by the way he was Irish

Gotcha, and I understand. I can think of a few that are always observed:
Christmas, New Years, Veterans Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving. The rest are questionable.

the day after would be a much better day off to be honest! However, this is based more on the Americans than the Irish. The Irish drink daily and in limiuted amounts as a social event. The Americans drink until they puke. Everything in America is in excess.

Baddog..Thanks for pissing on my cornflakes.

Well its like Cinco De Mayo just another excuse to drink...too many. It may have more meaning for some. St.Patrick was a Roman...got rid of all the "Snakes" in Ireland. There is no real snakes its a name for the Druids the Pagan Priest. Anyone can argue that Christianity caused alot more harm than Earth Bound Pagans. None the less it has become a day that everyone gets together with a festive mood, and anytime theres more smiles than frowns I say its a good thing

Cheers
