I don't think the jazz guys are getting their due in this list. Rock and blues people seem to get a better grade just because they play rock and blues. Where is Lee Ritenour? Joe Pass? Django Reinhardt? Pat Martino? Kenny Burrell? Charlie Byrd? John McLaughlin? Martin Taylor? Earl Klugh? These guys should be somewhere on the list and more. Just because a guy does rock doesn't mean he's better then someone who does jazz!

Having Robert Johnson at #51 is just fucked up and shows how backwards this list is. And where the hell is Kerry King and Jeff Hanneman or even Blondie Chaplin.

"greatest" is apparently a combination of ability, influence and popularity.

Someone like Holdsworth is so original and plays such difficult passages it would be very difficult for him to have more "influence".

I'm with Hot Hard Cash that the jazz guys are underrepresented especially for ability and technique but of course jazz is less popular even though many of the jazz players were hugely influential (example: Dimeola influenced Yngwie who started a whole brand of guitar playing though it didn't last long).

these lists are actually usually more about "fame' than talent.

There are 100 guitarists out there better than many of the guys in that list.

Or my favorite guitarist Steve Cropper

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Steve_Cropper

Ace Frehley cannot play guitar better than Steve

I could not agree more. McLaughlin would be #1 on any sort of sensible list.

I don't think "The Edge" should be included in that list at all. Seems totally out of place.

Some of the other ones that aren't "technically" great are probably on the list because of their influence on other bands. Johnny Ramone, etc.
