Who Killed the Electric Car?

Was there a conspiracy on part of the big oil companies to squash development of the electric vehicles? In the 2006 documentary titled, ?Who Killed the Electric Car??, Chris Paine chronicles the rise and fall of the General Motors? EV1.
Chris claims that hundreds of these cars were secretly destroyed by the automaker after the sudden recall citing lack of consumer demand. This, Paine says, is in sharp contrast to what the drivers of these cars have to say about the EV1. Almost everyone who drove the car, including big name celebrities such as Mel Gibson loved the car and would have loved to buy one. The EV1 was fast, quiet and produced zero emissions. However, the automaker refused to sell the EV1 only offering a lease option. Chris claims that even the ads for these cars were designed to make them less attractive on purpose.

If this conspiracy theory has any basis, what will the big oil companies do to stop the major automakers racing against time to develop viable hybrid cars, electric vehicles, flex fuel vehicles, etc?

Fog of war was outstanding, Paridise Lost was tough to watch (because I have kids) but very well done also.

I think it was more of a social commentary on how hard some kids are pushed into something their parents think is important.

It was that too..but I think the tension acted both to show the pressure on the kids with their parents and to get the audience into the actually contest. I know we saw it in the cinema and people were cheering when kids god words right, etc.

To me it was interesting because my mom is a science teacher and has long been in charge of the school district's science fair for kids of about the same age. The kids in Spellbound were the exact type of kids that would be doing science fair when they weren't doing the spelling bee. I ran into those kids all through my growing up because of. Particularly the one that was a bit of a spaz..she had so many of those kids around our place as a kid.

I agree with you about Capturing the Friedmans btw..that was a good period for documentaries.

I have that on my Netflix list and gave the series to my nerdy stepbrother who's a doctor and his wife and kids for Christmas. For some reason they don't watch "TV Shows" but they'll watch TV shows that are on DVD, lol.

Bus 174 is also very good.

For something different, and I believe others here have seen it, see Bus 174 - http://imdb.com/title/tt0340468/ - it is from Brazil and the captivating tale of the real life hijacking of a bus.

Who Killed the Electric Car was really good.

I say you should check out An Unreasonable Man; it completely changed my views on Ralph Nader and the Democratic Party forever and is very well presented in a non-bias, non-propaganda format (i.e. Michael Moore style)

NO but I did see the trailer for that on one of the world cinema dvds I watched and it has been on my list for a while. Maybe it was on one of the discs of the films I recommended to you too.

I am behind in my dvd watching with all the Oscar catchup I have been doing before Sunday.

Maybe this is a sign that we need to start a world cinema lovers site or something. I haven't seen much new out of the region lately. There has to be something out that I haven't seen.

I am waiting to finally see the lives of others...it looks like the German scene is kicking off.

Dig! - one of the best rock music documentaries I have ever seen about the Dandy Warhols vs. the Brian Jonestown Massacre rivalry (for lack of a better word)

The Grateful Dead Movie - not just for fans of the band

Festival Express - another great music documentary
