A little trick for speeding your computer up....

It's called ccleaner and it will make drastic improvements in your computer speed. It cleans out old registry files from uninstalled programs, unused files, etc... that slow your computer down.

IMPORTANT!!! -- WHEN YOU RUN THE PROGRAM, THE BOTTOM SECTION OF CHECK-BOXES (NAMED "ADVANCED") ARE ALL UN-CHECKED. YOU NEED TO GO THROUGH AND CHECK THESE AS NEEDED - THIS IS WHERE YOU GAIN YOUR SPEED. I ONLY LEFT "MENU ORDER CACHE" AND "TRAY NOTIFICATIONS CACHE" UNCHECKED.

Hope this helps!!

easier to just format and reinstall everything once a year.

eventually the registry cleaners will clean something that wasnt meant to be cleaned

I just formatted my laptop for the 4th time in 2 years. Finally I realized the problem. I would un-install all of the pre-packed bullshit and then install all of my programs. After getting everything installed and re -booting, defrag, and manually cleaning everything 10x it still seemed to lag. After running ccleaner it is a totally different machine.

try this software:

which is faster than the supplied Windows-based defragmentation tool. and it's free!

I use Norton Ghost. Backed up a fresh installation after installed all my software. I keep emails, icq and other data on a separate drive. Restore once a month - takes 20 minutes and I don't lose any data. Keeps my machines running at top speed.

I really prefer the whole format and redo strategy. You get rid of so much more crap that way, IMHO.

See my above post - after formatting for a 4th time and re-installing all of my programs it still lagged. Used the ccleaner and it is back to "blazing" - when the machine struggles to open the control panel there is a problem. If your icons don't all appear the instant you open it, it is too slow. (obviously this depands on processor, memory, etc )
