HD-DVD officially dead

The format war has turned into a format death watch.

Toshiba is widely expected to pull the plug on its HD DVD format sometime in the coming weeks, reliable industry sources say, after a rash of retail defections that followed Warner Home Video's announcement in early January that it would support only the rival Blu-ray Disc format after May.

Good now Universal and Paramount can put it's movies on blu-ray.

Well besides that article let's see

Blockbuster went exclusively blu-ray, Nextflix just announced they are going exclusively blu-ray. Best Buy just announced they would recommend blu-ray as "customer's digital format choice" and oh yeah, this just in

"Wal-Mart said that by June, its 4,000 Wal-Mart and Sam's Club stores would sell only Blu-ray discs and Blu-ray hardware players. "

I predict the death of blu-ray within a couple of years. With our ridiculous amounts of bandwidth and storage, physical media, regardless of format, is unnecessary.

I has to be pretty close to dead .. I was just reading a local flyer with some sales and the one that really stood out was " Toshiba HD-DVD players $139.00 and you get 5 HD-DVD movies with it" ... jeebus .. we're gonna be seeing them used as coasters for drinks in the local pubs soon enough ..

Yeah, looks like Toshiba is trying to move the last of it's product before they make the official announcement. Will be really hard to sell the players once they tell us they will no longer be producing the media for them.

Well considering that

A) 33% of Americans have no internet

B) 17% only have dial-up

C) The ISPs have shown ZERO interest in bringing broadband to those that don't have it already.

D) The average speed for those with broadband is 2 Mbps. Which is about 1/4 the minimum speed you need for HD downloading or streaming. ISPs do offer higher speeds but they are too expensive for the average user to justify.

E) ISPs like Time Warner are experimenting with caps. In TWs case they range from 5 GB - 40 GB. A HD download from Xbox Live or Itunes is 6 GB.

Phyiscal media is going to be needed and wanted for quite some time.

I see some blue-ray players that cost more than a PS3, do they offer anything more than one would get using the blue-ray player in the PS3?

Right now the PS3 would be the best one to get. Prices should come down. I'd wait until X-mas to get one. By then plenty of profile 2.0 players will be out. And the 1.0 and 1.1 players should be able to get at a very good bargin.

Last week they dropped the price of their HD-DVD add-on to $130. Maybe if they did it back in October things would be different now. M$ doesn't give a fuck about HD-DVD. Why would they be selling HD downloads on Xbox Live if they cared about HD-DVD? No doubt by x-mas you'll see a blu-ray add-on for the XBOX 360. M$ should have included a HD-DVD player on the 360 in the first place. This war would have been over long ago in favor of HD-DVD.

So then are standard DVD's going to go the way VHS tapes. just slowly reducing production until it all becomes blu ray?

What killed HD-DVD is the lack of solid copy protection.

The ability to run Java on BD means it can stay ahead of the rippers. No one has been able to crack BD+ yet. That's why the studios prefer it.

Besides HD-DVD really fucked up in the beginning, players should have been $99 all along. What does Toshiba care if they lose a few hundred million, they would get it all back and more later.

Regular DVD media is adequate for those without internet or broadband. Those who don't care about their internet access availability/speed probably aren't going to care about the insignificant gains in picture and sound quality that blu-ray will bring either. My parents are a prime example. They JUST got a DVD player within the last year. They resented having to get rid of their VHS player and thought the picture quality was "just fine."

Bandwidth speeds don't seem to be a problem. Here in bumblefuck kansas, the basic broadband plan from Cox is 7 Mbps with a 30GB d/l cap. For a little extra you can get 12 Mbps with a 60 GB d/l cap. I'll admit the caps need to be increased a LOT before downloading full-length, HD movies will be viable.

In the last year and a half or so that I have lived here, the speeds have increased from 3 Mbps to 7 Mbps for standard plans. If we keep seeing speed increases like that, in a couple of years streaming HD will be very possible assuming the d/l limits are increased as the bandwidth increases. You're right, we're not ready yet but we will be very soon.

Says YOU. Who are you to say they should be satisfied with DVD just because YOU think so?

But you said PHYSICAL media is dead in 2 years. Isn't DVD physical media? Make up your mind.

Not in 2 years. You must understand that unless cable moves to docsis 3.0( and only Comcast is serious about that ) speeds won't be going much higher. DSL? Well that's limited by many things including distance. FiOS will not be in many areas in 2 years not in 5 years.

I have Charter an it took them 4 years to finally raise their speeds above 3 Mbps. So in some areas speed increases happen more slowly.

You don't get it. Once DVD got established how long before VHS was killed off even though many people were still happy with it? The studios DO NOT want multiple formats. Why do you think Warner finally chose a side? They were tired of making movies in 3 formats. The studios want ONE format. The reatil stores want ONE format. That will be blu-ray.

This whole "downloads are the future" stuff is yeah the future, Not the NOW. it's still fantasy. Maybe in 2018 downloads will threaten physical media not before them. Mark this post.

Microsoft doesn't give a fuck that HD-DVD lost because like Willy said...

The other trend we're seeing is that direct download over broadband ? I think the greatest example of that is XBox Live ? (is) becoming an important choice. Over time, that will be the dominant way that people get their movies.

Just because Bill Gates is stupid enough the HD downloading will be the near future doesn't mean it will be. I remember back in 2000 hearing how about BPL was the next big thing in internet service and that in 10 years is will be widely available. Well here we are 2 years away and it's no further being reality than it was 8 years ago.

I didn't say 2050 I said 2018 which I know sounds all Blade Runnery and all, but it's only 10 years away. So no physical media is not dying out in 5 years.

When I went to my local video store all the decent movies were on blu ray, and the shitty old movies were on hv-dvd. So it was pretty clear to me then who was going to win.

Just my opinion .. but ISP's are actually waiting/working on new types of data transfer methods which use p2p caching similar to www.silverlight.net by Microsoft to have people share the file load instead of having it ALL come from a main server somewhere .. we're actually working on stuff with our developers at present to do just this ..IPTV is seriously the future and paysites are going to become obsolete

I predicted this when bluray came out. It had the best movies but the biggest advantage was being able to buy a ps3 and have it play games and blurays. I agree psychical media will become the standard eventually but I know alot of people who are just getting dvd players so I think psychical media will be here to stay in the short term.

Why argue when I have FACTS and LOGIC on my side. Do you think I spout off just to say something? This is an area where I am WAY more knowledgeable than you so fuck off. By the way since you dislike me and my posts so much why do you keep stalking my threads?

I think you just like to be combative and argue. And you might think you're more knowledgable, but you have no clue

And I don't stalk your threads. This is a topic that interests me and I love see everyone rile you up and get your panties twisted.

Where is the hostility? I give facts. People choose to ingore them that's on THEM not me. If I say 2+2=4 and some dipshit is going to continue to insist it's 5 then yeah I'm going to disagree with that everytime. And Im going to point out it's wrong everytime. That doesn't make me hostile. Teenage? I'm 39. How old are YOU, kid? Please put me on ignore if I'm hurting your feelings too much.

Can you put me on ignore by yourself or do you need my help?

Actually quite the opposite. If no one ever argued with me again I would be the happiest person in the world. I think that applies to 99.99% of the people out there.

One might learn how to spell KNOWLEDGEABLE before questioning others knowledge. By the way point out where I'm wrong instead of just saying I am without any supporting facts.

Who is the author of this thread? ME. Do you not ALWAYS fucking argue with me? YES. So you knew BEFORE you clicked this thread you'd have something smartass to say to me.

Phyiscal media is going to be needed and wanted for quite some time.
Good info/& stats!
Let's see, convert my charcoal sketches to 8mm, convert to Betamax, transfer to Laserdisc, Sell on Ebay...etc....

Wow, a 39 year old man being mistaken for a teenage boy because of his attitude on forums. That should tell you something, shouldn't it?

Glad I just built a HTPC with an LG Blu-ray/HD-DVD combo drive. I can pick up clearance HD movies and future Blu-ray movies.

I gotta say, my Toshiba A3 did an awesome job upconverting regular DVDs though.

Yes, it's official now, they gave up, too bad for a good technology. Blu-ray may be better, but more expensive.
