Large sites have been doing it for years. Apple uses Akamai; large companies like Google, manage their own ASN and interroute themselves, others are trying to do a form of this using Amazon's S3.
It's nothing new; I used InterNap almost 10 years ago.

Ya, it's been around for some time, just not really any presence in the adult market. It really is a good system, check the sig for some details.

CDN's are great if you're large enough to need it.
Can get pricey but from my experience, a few conference calls w/ the right people and you can negotiate a deal.

Yup - unfortunately for them, S3 is not a content delivery network. S3 is a great storage platform, but it's delivery capabilities are sub-optimal from a performance stand point.
Given that trend - one of the first things we did when building out our own Content Delivery Network was to integrate with S3 on the back-end directly to pull content off of it using the API (rather than forcing our customers to operate their own HTTP gateways to S3 like most CDNs - or open their S3 content library to any unauthenticated users) and into our CDN for caching and actual delivery. Additionally - at $0.18-0.13/GB (before you tack on the surcharges for the actual REQUESTS sent to it), if you're doing any sort of volume, a proper CDN wouldn't be all that more expensive.

Not many, but it's mainly because it wasn't available to Adult.
It's my understanding the main player Akamai refuses to sell to Adult, the next player Limelight does so, but mostly just streaming, and they don't market to the adult industry. Level3 used to be Savvis, which also didn't. The partnership with L3 is the first time a major CDN provider has teamed up with a company that has a strong connection and trust in the adult market. This technology is used by most major non-adult websites, but this is the first time Adult can take advantage of it at a price that's realistic to their business needs. |
