Oppinion on attending a wake
So, I found out my old flight instructor died a few nights ago, I knew him for over a year as I was working on my commercial pilots license. I didn't always fly with him, but trained 4 days a week and saw him regularly. Ive never met his family and he has 3 young kids. Ive gone out a few times with him for beers, etc. Last timewe spoke was about 2 months ago.
I feel kinda weird showing up at his wake as I said ive never met any of his family. One of my other pilot buddies called me with the info on the wake. Would it be appropriate for me to attend? Thanks for your oppinions. |

It's rarely inappropriate to go to a wake or funeral.
One of my son's friends died about 2 years before he did and at his wake his mother said to me "I didn't know he had so many friends!". That made me realize that wakes and funerals aren't for the deceased, they're for the living. And the more you can surround them and let them know their loved one meant something to you, the better. |

It is very appropriate, as Peaches said so well. When my family was touched by death it was a comfort to us seeing so many people both close and not as close be there. It reminds you just how many people they touched and affected.
Also, a mantra that I try to follow- I would rather regret doing something, than to regret not doing something.
