It's rarely inappropriate to go to a wake or funeral.
One of my son's friends died about 2 years before he did and at his wake his mother said to me "I didn't know he had so many friends!". That made me realize that wakes and funerals aren't for the deceased, they're for the living. And the more you can surround them and let them know their loved one meant something to you, the better.
