What will you do when there is no money...

in adult anymore? do you have an exit strategy? do you have a fallback?

if you are not a top tier program, you will be out of business in the next few years...

what will you do then?

Just to bad we do not sell sex, we sell the illusion of sex and there are people giving that illusion away.

Now prostitutes and those who actually sell sex will be just fine.

Online advertisers who happen to specialize in pornography may fall on much harder and leaner times. The only thing that will seperate the cash from the consumer then is quality and a niche that they can not get terabytes of for free. Period and end of story.

Gambling will always make money, so will real sex, so will drugs, so will alcohol, and so will religion. The rest is up in the air so to speak.

The only people who think this, are those who fail to adapt.

if there is no longer money in online adult, then you can probably kiss the internet goodbye. The methods of making money will most likely change, but it's no different than the changes we saw 10 years back.

Everything must evolve over time. It's survival of the fittest.

Just to clarify my above statement of the internet disappearing without porn...
If people don't surf for porn, then a lot of people have no need for high speed internet.

If porn is all given away for free, then producers have no reason to keep creating quality porn.

If there is no porn to give away, then people will stop putting up free porn.

If there is no free porn to give away, then people won't attract visitors.

if there are no free visitors, then webmasters are just wasting bandwidth, and there will be a need to shut down shop.

Of course this is dramatic and there are other facets of the internet....However, porn is such a big piece of the pie, that it is in everybody's interest to support it.

What changes do you see happening right now that lead you to conclude only the "top tier" programs will be in business in a few years?

ok.. let me restate... mayeb not just the top tier, but def only the programs that can make the changes needed to continue on...

i wont get into a lot of specifics, but i will say that the issue is based as much on the US economy as it is on free content....

a lot of people here complain about free content or rather stolen content being given away for free as a major issue, but i can tell you that the trend for free content is only growing stronger...

for the people that complain about the torrent sites like the piratebay and tube sites like porno tube, you haven't seen anything yet...

there is a growing trend towards private file sharing sites that are by invite only and are based on parameters that will be very difficult if not impossible to discover and will alllow for the free and safe sharing of not only adult content, but also proprietary software applications and more...

I would agree with you there to an extent and if you've followed the history of the industry you've witnessed a few changes in "leadership". The other point is that the largest programs make so much money in 5 years that their owners often care less after that. Those companies have been very owner centric. A great mind or partnership behind the company. We don't have many great companies in this business; ones "built to last" once the owner leaves day-to-day operations. They often don't adapt because the driving force behind the company is no longer as involved.

But also, some of the companies that arose in the 2nd wave (say, 2000-2005) were and are huge.

The people who use these, wouldn't have bought porn to begin with.

Older surfers will trust membership sites with good reputations anyway over people giving away the farm. It has to do with freebie sites infecting them with spyware, viruses, etc. A lot of people will do what it takes to keep their pc's safe, and that is by staying withing a certain circle of trust.

I do think there will be plenty enough money in "adult internet".

Here are some of my beliefs:

1. The number of adult webmasters grew faster in the past ten years than the number of credit card using adult internet users.

2. Increasing free porn (first galleries and now the proliferation of free movies) is and will lead to a smaller pie to divide than there would have been otherwise but it will still be huge.

3. Something like 80% of the money was made by 20% of businesses and that will continue to be true (Pareto's Law or something like it)

4. The skill sets/mentality needed to prosper in the industry constantly changes and will continue to change. Some who did well in one environment will do less well in the next and to a lesser extent vice-versa.

5. The new leadership in each next generation (about every 5 years so far) will tend to come from those who gained BUSINESS experience in the previous ones. From "webmasters" and business owners who earned their "hard knock" degrees.

6. There will be new unthought of opportunities and those from (5) above will be best positioned to succeed at them.

7. Credit card companies and their rules will be a bigger threat to our industry than governments.

Yeah, I think I first made that observation on a messageboard in about 2000. Back then whenever I told someone what I did for a living they would say "Oh, I've heard that is really easy money". That was a very prevalent belief and sucked a lot of people in. I don't hear that much anymore.

The low barrier to entry brings a lot people in that would otherwise never have thought of running a business or at least, it brings them to business a lot earlier.

Assumably it is evening out now as internet penetration approaches "par". Though it is a little difficult to gauge because I see a lot more international "webmasters" these days than even just 5 years ago.

It's common knowledge those are the two things that never go down.

When the country's economy isnt doing two well they stay strong. For example 9/11 the porn biz was doing fine and people were still going out and gambling (i dont know about online gambling though?)

I am pretty sure Penthouse wnet bankrupt or close too and was bought out. Donald Trump crapped out on his gambling empire. It is possible for margins on any industry to get squeezed to the point that it is no longer profitable.

How do we prepare for this? Simple do not spend all that you make. Just like in ANY business.

Save now for a rainy, pornless day later... Porn has been around since the caveman days, I don't think it's going anywhere now. We'll morph with the industry like we have all along...

This industry reminds me of a type of deforestation. The larger number are happy to just chop the shit out of it while only a minority are replanting as they go.

Regardless of that, its pretty clear who wont have any problems.

ADL Colin & CheneyRumsfield: Well Said Chaps! :

I'm adding two things I strongly believe is needed TO adapt:

1. Offer alternative site membership types, like shorter & cheaper - we got to keep stimulating that impulse, not let it be quenched by Tubes etc.

2. "CC Payments By Proxy" - things like "Virtual Cards" for surfers, both discreete which many like and shielding against CC manufacturers harder regulations.

Just two things, and that whole adapt-or-die thing doesn't look so threatening anymore, does it?

Don't you think that the coming quantum computers will improve the situation? Program owners will be able to lock everything down, and even rent movies to members . And, without breaking the quantim code, they wont be able to be copied and shared...

Another thread that doesn't mean anything. Everyone who is smart did, does, and always will make millions. The only exit strategy is when you die. LOL! Seriously...what is the point of the question? Does this guy really give a damn what anybody has for an "exit strategy" or is it just another person who doesn't have a NOW strategy so instead of making money they post threads about nothing. Or maybe a person who needs some conversation and can't find anybody to talk to? Shit, this ain't fucking brain surgery. You make a wheelbarrow full of money. Then you invest the money. Then you make another wheelbarrow and you buy a house. Then you make another wheelbarrow...and so on and so on. If I never read another thread about how we will all be out of business in a few years it'll be too soon. Anybody that is actually IN this business has been hearing that shit since the beginning. I was told that in '95 when I was shooting porn for brick and mortar. I was told that in '97 when I opened a content company for online. I have been told that since the late 90's when I went into TGP. And I was told last year that opening a solo girl site wouldn't work...Now I'm NETTING 30 grand a month and exponentially growing just off of the paysite alone and it's only been open 10 months. The sky ain't falling. The only people going out of business are the ones who shouldn't be here to begin with and don't really have a business or the ones who for whatever reason aren't in touch with their audience. Period.

if there is no longer money in online adult, then you can probably kiss the internet goodbye. The methods of making money will most likely change, but it's no different than the changes we saw 10 years back.

Forex....

Porn is already dead... only sponsor owners and big sites owners are doing money...

The rest are doing cents....

Just check out the forums AWI, ThinkReel and VideosBoard they are all dead!!!!

When there used to be 1000 webmasters connected ona daily basis.. now with luck you see 10 in a day.. and one new topic every two days..

XBIZ is dead for 90% of webmasters... Of course those "MarcDe" ones are still doing money...

Quit now, and invest somewhere else...

its really hard when you have no money at all especially if you are a family man..there are lots of things you want to do but you can't do it anymore...that's what i'm experiencing right now...no money, no permanent client, no stable job...i guess i'm not lucky enough to have a good life.

Who do you think is puttin' the screws to the credit card companies?

Government is still among the biggest threats to the industry. CC companies are their lackies.
