The judge will reduce the damages, it will probably be like 400 million or something. But's it's kinda stupid. Are people going to start suing McDonalds because they ate a big mac everday for 30 years and then had heart disease because of it. Sure big macs don't have addictive qualities but it's basically the same thing.

Crap like this is why everyone's insurance is doubling. My house insurance went up almost $ 200 dollars this year because my insurance company and many others were TOO STUPID to not have a clause in the insurance plan for mold. YEAH, mold damage.. grrrrrr

Can you even manage putting a claim against an insurance company for that ? I could not...

Anyway, I find this smoking award insulting since my father died at the age of 43 from an enlarged heart.. It could have been prevented if the HMO and medical specialists for the Police department would have done the proper testings etc...NOT tripled his medicine and not watch him... Did my mother get crap ? Hell, no.....

it's all good news,at least the americans should have followed how the cigarette companies did their campaigns in the past decades,how they provided the people with fake research results about smoking,how they hide health reports stating that smoking causes cancer and various problems etc.

Why do you care if such a company gets sued? Go a walk in a local hospital and see how many people die cause of smoking every day. These people when they started smoking 30,50 or 60 years didn't know that the results one day they would knock the door.

These companies are real mafia, they are huge and their owners in near all countries keep a low profile. The whole situation is fucked up.

Nope, we can't sue for anything. Infact there is a doctor out west that will not treat patients who smoke...To me a person should be able to sue over that, but nu uh not here!

After reading about your insurance going up drastically the other day, I was hoping the same wouldn't be applicable here in Canada, but yesterday I got my renewel notice as well and it went up about 40%. I own a condo and live in an apartment so I need to cover two places. I haven't read through the fine print yet but I did glance over something about them opting out of earthquake coverage or requiring a special costly rider...

In general, we are not as litigious as in the US and jury awards cannot be taken out of thin air like it seems in this case. I believe the idea in the US is that the award needs to be punitive, as in it has to hurt - so the larger the company - the more the juries tack on like in the hot coffee at McDonalds case a few years back (as an aside - do you remember the Seinfeld episode with Kramer getting burned in the crotch...), but for whatever reason it seems the judge always lowers the punitive award after the jury is through so I have no idea what is what...

Apparently business is good. I would first off like to congratulate her lawyers. They are sure to benefit most from the decision.

Don't worry, there are already lawsuits working against all kinds of junk food producers. They are also sure to produce huge windfalls.

With the precedent that this type of case creates, how in the world do the beer and liquor companies avoid lawsuits? If cigarette smokers can win these suits, why not victims of drunk drivers, or more likely the drunk drivers themselves.

That's just fucking stupid. The thing is that this is gonna snowball and everyone that's smoked in their life is gonna be suing them. I don't know where the fuck they get that 40 BILLION dollars from, that's just fucking rediculas, I could understand more if it was like 1 million.

I think that we're responsible for what we do to ourselves, if we decide to smoke, then fuck, we should know that breating in smoke into our lungs sure the hell isn't good for us.

Both my grandma and stepdad died from cancer from smoking for many years, I think that I'll sue them and see what I can get, for 2 family member DEATHS, I should be able to get at least 100 billion from them
