Arylia vs. Gallery Daemon
If you've used both what do you think of each one and what was your favorite? I'm looking to change from my custom gallery generator on a site to something more mainstream with extra features. I've personally used Arylia and liked it quite a bit. I'd like to take Gallery Daemon for a spin but the demo is down.

I was considering that myself, but I have seen other demo's taken down in the past due to issues of giving world wide access.

Arylia is very solid, I know the guy who coded it quite well and he is always around if anything is needed

Last I knew it was sold and the original owner went onto other things. Was the coder kept around on the new team?

The coder of Arylia sold his share... he runs some babelogs (I think pornspinner.com is one)
I own (and coded) Gallery Daemon. I don't have a public demo... but if you hit me on ICQ then I can show you a copy on a working site. If you are looking to make 2-3 galleries per day for a blog then I suggest you give UUGallery a look. It has some nice features. http://www.uusoftware.com/ |

Just an update, I tested Gallery Daemon and liked it better than Arylia so that's what I've decided to go with.

Oh I can tell you... it's a script I understood fast and easily, it was only a matter of BW and you could grab and build more than 20,000 fhgs a night while you were sleeping based on your templates and ready to go.. that's awesome.

I am currently working on version 3 of Arylia (did you guys not get the memo? we could repost it...). Will it be better than Gallery Daemon? Well, it seems to be a matter of preference now, so it's hard to imagine it won't be a matter of preference then. Of course I like it better, but I'm somewhat biased... ![]() Version 3 should be ready for public use in a month or so, though it might be a beta. Since developers are known for grossly overestimating themselves, and I've noticed that I am not immune to such deficiencies, you can probably actually expect to see it by the end of March or early April. But my goal is mid- to late February. If you think seeing the half-finished state of it might change your opinion, feel free to send me a PM and I'll show it to you (after giving you the appropriate disclaimers and warnings, of course). It is already v2-feature complete (and yes, I did rewrite it all line-by-line) so even in its current state it is quite a useful script. |

Being a smartass to a former-potential customer is also fun, dumb fuck.
I asked you WHY there wasn't a global demo, and that's something you didn't answer. "LOL HIT ME UP ME FOR A WORKING DEMO isn't an answer to my question." Reading is fun? Fuck off. First of all, you hadn't previously answered the question. Second of all, you just lost a customer. and there's your answer to the question: Arylia

Guess what? I am not damaged in a bit by the fact that you are an Arylia customer... I could care less... I have never said a single bad word about Arylia other then it didn't have the features that I wanted. In fact I frequently refer people to other scripts as you can see in the thread above. After that rant I am relieved that you aren't my customer... here is something you don't know! I hand pick customers... Thx for saving me the headache. Now who is the 14 year old kid... me... or you? |

I think the short summary is that GD is better if you're building a lot of galleries and they don't have to be perfect. Arylia is better if you just need a few per day, and want them to be just right without too much effort.

CALLING PR GUY. And, funny, you were trying to make Arylia look bad by saying it was sold, not even knowing/stating all the facts. Yeah, it was sold... to the programmer. Leaving little tid bits left out to drive business away from them is a great business tactic.

Just found it funny that you can't answer questions directed toward your company. But you felt free to answer the question whether someone else's company sold a script, while at the same time, not knowing all the information needed to correctly answer the said question.
And wow, I wasn't handpicked to use your script. Is suicide my only option now? I love a jackass that can't accept the criticism he deserves.

I have used both Arylia and GD, and Gallery Daemon is much better by far, not putting Arylia down, GD just has way more features and is better to use

I wasn't trying to make Arylia look bad... I think it's a great product. I am not closely associated with Arylia... nor do I spend time researching their business. I saw posts on the boards that it was for sale... I talked to the guy that sold his share... he is also a programmer... I thought he was THE programmer... Tonight was the first time I have ever spoken to kryptx on ICQ as far as I know. He explained that he bought out his partner... I was mistaken about the details. I think you can see how that could be easily confused. My apologies. My script is just different... they each have their own set of features... neither one is perfect for everyone... My script is targeted to people that want to generate ALOT of galleries and although it is definately able to make a single gallery at a time... there are other scripts that have a better feature set for making galleries one by one from an seo perspective. When someone hits me up about Gallery Daemon, the first thing I do is ask them questions to determine what goals they want to accomplish by purchasing Gallery Daemon. If I think that my script is overkill for what they need... I send them elsewhere. I have no interest in merely selling licenses to people that have no idea how to use them... or have no need for them. I gave away over 40 licenses in board contest threads... I think maybe 10 of those winners actually used the script because they don't need it. It would be nice to have a PR guy... and a support guy (or 2)... and another programmer to help me... and a server guy... but Gallery Daemon isn't that profitable. I can't pay people to do these jobs yet. So I do it myself. |

Both scripts autothumb the galleries and both have manual cropping features... Arylia has a javascript cropper and Gallery Daemon has one made in flash. Gallery Daemon does have additional thumbnail adjustment features for people using ImageMagick (saturation, brightness, contrast, quality) and it also has a drag and drop thumb ordering feature so you can change the arrangement of the thumbs in the gallery... it's very easy to use if you have a single thumb size in the gallery but may be a little confusing with more thumb sizes.

Arylia does have a few features that GD doesn't, but they are mostly little things -- not major features like batch gallery building or video support.
For instance, GD's template system doesn't support a single identifier for all thumbs, meaning that a template always has a fixed number of thumbnails. In Arylia you can create galleries using a single template that just get bigger if you have more images. Another example is pruning -- nation-x may be planning to add this, but I read at one point that it doesn't currently allow users to prune a large set of images evenly, to get an even distribution of images from a wide selection. There are also other factors, like the fact that Arylia can run under safe mode (though this isn't easy), runs fine with magic quotes enabled, does not require cron jobs to install, and is cheaper than GD. There's no question, though, that if you need a large quantity of galleries made every day, or if you're dealing with movie galleries, GD is far superior to Arylia 2. |

kryptx is correct about Gallery Daemon not having a single thumb variable to output all thumbs to the gallery. You must specify a variable for each thumb in the template. I have never had any customers ask for this feature. I think that the template engine in Gallery Daemon is flexible, very simple to use and easy to understand. Your right... I don't have image pruning. Morphius was one of my beta testers and he asked if I could add a feature for "crop profiles"... I am assuming this would be the same feature. It's on my list of features to add. Gallery Daemon doesn't require cron jobs... they are optional. It has NO SUPPORT for servers running magic_quotes_gpc as this feature will be removed from PHP in the next version... I don't see any reason to code support for it when the PHP Team even thinks it's a bad idea. It is fixed as easy as adding an .htaccess file with php_flag magic_quotes_gpc off to the gallery daemon script folder in most cases. In addition to some of the features already stated, Gallery Daemon also supports custom RSS feeds of the galleries with thumbs in any size you have specified, delimited export for tgp scripts and mass import of fhg urls. It also supports Imagemagick, which Arylia 2 doesn't. Yes. Arylia is cheaper then Gallery Daemon for single domain licenses. |

I forgot to mention one other important feature... Gallery Daemon can import FHGs from any valid RSS feeds as well as import any updates that feed has later if you use a cron job.

You should probably change the wording of the system requirements on your forum:
Cronjobs - Gallery Daemon requires 4 cronjobs to enable all features... 3 minimum led me to believe it requires 3 no matter what. Quote:

Gallery Daemon is much better imo, cause it offers mass gallery making, make good quality thumbs, not blurred ones like arylia.
The advantage of arylia is that it can use zips from memberarea with password protection. For tgps when u need a lot of gals made fast i think best option would be gallery daemon |

I figure I should jump into this thread too, as I have been part owner for over 6 months too. Arylia v2 is about 2 years old, but is still a very solid script. Gallery Daemon is more with the times have nice features such as bulk ripping. But Arylia v3 is coming soon and with it will have all the old quality features you've come to love over the years/months/whatever of using it, but will also have many new features such as bulk ripping, additional movie support (arylia v2 is embedable movie compatible now), categories, and more.
Before I became a part owner of Arylia, I owned (and still own) the most licenses out of anyone, so I USE this script and a I use it a lot. It works and it works well, and I use it on both picture and video sites. Arylia's hybrid galleries are fuckin sweet ![]() Feel free to hit me up with any arylia related questions at 295-369-830.
