BMW M3 or MB C63 AMG

The Audi RS4, despite being 4WD and having an amazing V8, has just aged a little too much. The decision is now down between those two contenders. I had always been an M3 fan, the new C63's beastly 6.2l is an incredible engine though.

How would you choose and why?

Are you buying it new? Either way, I'd stick with the M3.

Already seen it driving here in Germany.

C63 will be a lot faster in a straight line, guaranteed and i think it'll be faster in the corners too!

but when it comes down to it, how many people here will actually drive either car in the type of "corners" where you will even begin to notice the difference.
the only thing that matters is straight line highway/road speed and the C63 definitely wins that.
don't forget that some simple ECU tuning will also get the C63 up to the same BHP as the E63/CLS63/CL63

I don't think I agree with you on the cornering. If you turn off the ESP, it appears to be pretty out of control.

The interior on the new C class is pretty laughable, too. Very, very cheap.

They just reviewed all three together on Top Gear. True it is Top Gear, but good footage of them all.

www.autospies.com has a link to the site with all three segments.

Oh and don't get a CSL like someone above said. Well, unless you want to only drive it in the sun on a dry day with absolutely no luxury.

Or, forget all of those and get a real sports car. Get in line for an R8.

Get the M3 E90/92, or if you can afford it, the M5 E60.

Just yesterday, the M3 won in comparison to the RS4 and C63 on Top Gear.

I can't post the URL due to silly posting restrictions on GFY, but here's the video of the show: www DOT autoblog DOT com/2007/12/24/video-i-top-gear-i-drives-the-m3-c63-and-rs4

I agree, the C63 can trap 116mph in a 1/4 mile, that will flat out murder a M3 in acceleration. The M3 will murder it in the corners though, the sequential trans shifts way faster, it has a perfect weight distrubution & it's 200lbs lighter, (the C63 has a 54/46 weight split like a Mustang due to the huge motor, M3 has a perfect 50/50 weight dist.) and the suspension used in the C63 is pretty docile for daily driving.

anyone pushing the E90 M3 isn't doing so based on facts, but rather their own fantasy's.

The C63 is the higher performer, that is fact. I won't even be getting a C63, any C-Class is way below my wants so I'm not even posting this as preferential treatment towards MBZ. In fact I used to own an E46 M3 and it was indeed a great car for its time!

I think it all depends on age. I have never been a mercedes fan and probably never will. I will be buying the new m3 when it comes out.

I prefer BMW over Mercedes too. BMWs are less powerful but they use lighter/smaller engines that rev. to 8,500rpms+. The Mercedes uses a big V8 that weighs a ton, but it makes a lot more torque and HP under the curve.
Even when you compare the E55 to the M5, or the last gen C55/CLK55 to the E46 M3 it's the same. The M's have always been more raw, lighter and track tuned. The Mercedes make more power, but the chassis & suspension is more geared towards luxury.

The new M3 is gonna be nice, can't wait for that.

The C63 will have a remapped and incredibly fast transmission. The suspension is also not like anything else in the C-class range.

The C63 was built to be a direct competitor to the E90 M3, and has got it beat in all avenues, but one. I think the E90 M3 is absolutely hot and would love it if it was faster.

its a high end luxury performance sedan. it sold for $100k when it was new. $30k depreciation in 3 years is actually bad.

how much do you think old ass ferrari's sell for?

It does shift fast, but it's still nowhere near the sequential used in M class BMWs. The C63 still uses a traditional slushbox with a torque convertor, it's a hightech automatic but it will never shift as fast as a true sequential transmission.
A sequential is basically a manual transmission, (no torque convertor) with an automatic clutch. You basically get a shift as firm as if it were a manual, but much faster than a human OR torque convertor could ever change gears. The SMGs used in M powered BMWs shift faster than the F1 sequential used in Ferraris. As far as I know, no other production car minus true F1 race cars can shift faster.

The suspension might be great, but it can't overcome pyshics. Balance & weight are the biggest factors when it comes to handling & braking. The M3 is both lighter & more balanced. HP isn't everything. It's funny going to my local track and watching a 200hp Elise drug 400-500hp+ cars like it's nothing.

the C63 will be faster than the M3 around the track. So even though the M3 is more romantic and sophisticated with its SMGIII (i used to have an E46 M3 SMGII, so i know about it), the C63 will still be faster overall.
The M3 will win in the looks department though and maybe will end up being faster if they come out with a supercharger or turbo kit for it.

The Mercedes 63 engine already has turbos being developed for it so BMW vendors better step it up.
The 335i is already faster than the E90 M3 with a simple ECU flash, and I doubt it would be THAT much slower around the track then an M3.

We shall see, the numbers will tell all once both are out!

You have to go with the MERC ... the reign of the M3 has finished.
They lost the game on this one ... they got too cocky and assumed that the M3 was bulletproof and nobody could touch it. Thats how the C63 came and kicked their ass.

AMG has created the best car ever ... forget AMG cars of the past.
This is a new thing.

Here is a great review.
By the way ... i test drove this thing here in Dubai ... OH MY GOD!!!
Thats all i have to say!

So very wrong on the merc being faster on the track statement. The merc has a nuke of an engine, very much agreed, but the car doesnt handle very well. The bmw is a masterpiece as far as handling goes. Check this following video from this sundays top gear episode (https://youtube.com/watch?v=zd30ttW0eNM). yes top gear is usually alot of bullshit and fucking around with the cars, but the same driver (the stig) drove all 3 of them around a track in the south of spain. Check the video to see the results.

If i had to choose between those 3, id go for the M3, eventhough it lost ground on the looks department compared to Audi's soon to come A5 / S5. The audi looks amazing, but then again, it lacks in performance with around 100hp less (note: i am NOT talking about the RS4 here)

If you want an automatic go with the Mercedes. If you want the M3 go with the 6sp version. After 2 years of driving an 03 M3smg I liked the car but not the transmission. The smg was nothing but a pain. On hills at a stop sign it you need an extra foot to keep it from rolling. Under full throttle it slammed so hard It was amazing it actually stayed together.

From what I gather, there is no new M3 with SMG out yet... it's a 6 speed manual, the SMG comes later next year.

Hopefully they get it sorted out before they release it. I drove BMW's for a lot of years so I clearly am a fan. When people would ask/tell me to get a Mercedes my answer was always *I'm not old enough* for one of those.
Then last summer the dealer who i've been buying from for years had a new E55amg that he insisted I test drive. I was amazed at the car. I bought it on the spot and now it's been over a year that I've had it. It hasn't gotten boring at all. Not saying I won't ever go back to BMW for a daily driver but for now they don't offer anything I like better than this AMG..
