Question for all TGP gurus and submitters
We are doing a research on behalf of a dedicated server provider (and good friend of mine), and I was wondering;
How many of you guys are actually using static hosting solutions? Or would be interested in one? If so, what do you pay for your bandwidth or expect the bandwidth to cost you per gig? Static basically means no hosting/running of scripts allowed (no PHP/CGI, just .html pages, images and files), which takes a huge load off a server and support staff, which eventually means less workload and lower prices. |

I've always used the cheapest servers for my galleries and turned off all unneeded stuff. But I actually don't know if it would make the server any "cheaper" as I don't think that anybody would host galleries on an high end server anyway.

Static only for a TGP. That'd be fine for a set-and-forget system if you didn't trade traffic or update anything. E.G. Death. Paying any more than $10/mbit for a TGP (Cogent) is insane.

Anyway, I am more curious about shared/virtual. When it's a dedicated server then offcourse you are the only person using it. Anyone do TGP on shared? |

However, shared? Tons of people do. DWHS is probably one of the larger CPanel hosts in the industry right now.

Yep...got a tgp running Smart Thumbs on a virtual account at Naked Hosting (see sig). Runs like a dream and I've never had a problem with the hosting.

$100 per 5-7mbit seems to be the average price right now........

You guys missed the "Doesn't understand how this works" qualifier at the beginning of his statement: "Static basically means no hosting/running of scripts allowed (no PHP/CGI, just .html pages, images and files), which takes a huge load off a server and support staff, which eventually means less workload and lower prices."

dedicated box (colo or otherwise) + dedicated line ;\
if you don't have enough tgp's to justify a dedicated box or don't know how to run a dedicated box then just go with shared or fully managed. static tgp's are pretty useless unless you really like updating things manually. Unless all of your tgp's are getting 6-700,000 uniques a day combined you don't have to worry about the added server load of having dynamically generated content. your box will suffer from excessive I/O operations before it gets bogged down by running cgi/php. |
