Who owns property in France?
I have been looking at real estate in France. Talking about the southern (Riviera) area. Looking for apartments and such which is all I would want since it would be used as a vacation spot only.
Anyone have tips or ideas on how to find some good property in a decent area? If you live(d) there what would you suggest? |

The French have/had a tendency to assemble into major towns and cities and mean't that in the countryside there was less demands on real estate. There were some exceptional properties on the market at that time - eg a chateau complete with original fixtures - the real deal for.. in current dollar terms, around $240K. One of my partners did buy one - complete with courtyard, stables etc and he paid around $300k - the place is now worth serveral millions. Sadly now, it's not "cheap" - the Riviera/south coast is fairly expensive, even just for an apartment and, only my ![]() Again... only my ![]() ![]() |

webby is spot on with his analysis.
However something important to bear in mind. What may be percieved as the best necessarily isn't. For example, you may think that the south east is the best, keep an eye out for the south west, Same weather, same properties, same restuarants, same style, less money, less tourists and the same general feel. South of Perpinon(spelling is bad for french names) sainte cypriene i went to a few years ago and it was the nicest holiday town i had been too. If you disagree, and do look for the popular areas, then an apartment in the town of Frejus is worth a look. St Tropez is also nice, but very expensive obviously, not just properties, cabs, resturants, bakeries all over charge. Nice is a wonderful city and you would not go wrong there. stay clear of sainte maxine, i went to the beach there once and never returned, they was all types of rubbish floating about. However you are not the only one moving there for holidays, the village where we have rented a house for the past 17 years recently had a supermarket built in it, yes a super market in a village! When we first went there it didnt even have a shop Anyway good luck and i know this area pretty well so if you want any more help just pop on icq

About 1.5-2M US dollars for a studio/one bedroom apartment in Monte Carlo, Monaco.

My two cents is to look into Antibes. It is a great place with less traffic than Nice and or Monte Carlo, etc. But is still right on the ocean and all the other cities and towns on the southern coast are accessible by either highway if you decide to keep a car there or by a train that runs very often. Having said that, obviously the places are much more expensive there now. As it is a popular vacation spot for both North Americans and Europeans alike. I think you would do well to look in Spain as well. The island of Majorca just off the coast is beautiful and not all that developed yet (I was there last summer). And that's my two cents ![]()

Marseille and Toulon are pretty cheap.
If your budget is important, Nice, Cannes. If your budget is unlimited, Cap d'Antibes, St Tropez, Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat, Monaco.

Sardinia in Italy is also a good alternative.

Personally I'd prefer something on a mid-southern Italian coast.
