I suggest that you try to find someone in your community that has a husband or wife in the military and contribute something to help them out at Christmas time this year. A present for the kids...if any...or a few bucks to do with as they choose. Military familes are far from being wealthy and even a few bucks for them would help them out. In other words help support them in a material way...not just in spirit.

I have more than twenty active duty friends and I for one am contributing cash to each one of them as a Christmas gift.

I tend to agree with you. This is a job- period.. plain and simple. Regardless of the duties the employees of the US military knew the job description when they signed up.. speaking of signed up:

People that are below the poverty line are not going hungry. To be under the poverty line in the US means you most likely have a car...a house or apartment...with electricity...indoor plumbing...running water...stove...refrigerator...color TV...washer...dryer...multiple other appliances...furniture...etc. They have a multitude of free services that are available to them including health care

My brothers son has just gone over to Afganistan to serve for 3 months. Shit he is only 21 years of age and one of the nicest guys you could meet. My brother cried his eyes out when he left and I havent seen him cry since we were younger. I hate these fucking wars and I feel for the guys serving in both Iraq and Afganistan. It dosent really come home to you until one of your own family end up going out there to serve. I have every respect for theKing for donating money to the familys...good on you

It's the same in any western country man. What is noticeable are the levels at which the poverty level kicks in - don't know for all countries, but can think of a few where the poverty qualification level is three times higher.

Example... $8500 is nothing - it's barely enough to feed a cat.

I get what you are saying, but a lot of what are under the poverty line in this country are the lowest of the low that aren't interested in working and would rather live off the government dole so to speak. True there are a lot of exceptions, but a lot of people in this position do use the Armed Forces to improve their lot in life and get a free education. Regardless of whether or not you agree with current US policy you can't help but admire any kid that would put his life on the line to improve his position in life when he doesn't have any other options...

Sure, tho it's the same in any western country. There's the lazy mob who have never worked in 10 years or more, but, in with that mix are genuine people who, for whatever reason, are potless.

Na.. not mixing people in the forces into this - they never asked to be placed in whatever position (tho it may be the deal when they signed up in the military). And agree - it's kinda shameful when an unusally high number of these people end up on the streets - they sure deserve better.

Thinking of a few law-related, - some may have "reasonable" money, but still not worth it. Got US LE friends who have been shot, stabbed, raped - hell, can't remember all the violations, but they do take a toll over the years.
